The Captain says he is calling it a career.
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter announced Wednesday afternoon that he will retire following the 2014 season — his 20th in the major leagues.
Jeter, who appeared in only 17 games last season due to an assortment of injuries, made the announcement on his Facebook page.
“I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball,” he said.

I thought Nolan Ryan was already voted in unanimously. Or did one stinking writer somewhere vote against him because he didn’t play for the Yankees?
I'd like to see Jeter be the second one, after Mariano Rivera.

Imagine that. Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver getting more votes than Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. Put that one in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.

He received the highest-ever percentage of votes with 98.84% (on 425 of 430 ballots), higher than Nolan Ryan’s 98.79% (491 of 497), and Ty Cobb’s 98.23% (222 of 226). Three of the five ballots that had omitted Seaver were blank, cast by writers protesting the Hall’s decision to make Pete Rose ineligible for consideration. One ballot was sent by a writer who was recovering from open-heart surgery and failed to notice Seaver’s name. The fifth “no” vote was cast by a writer who said he never voted for any player in their first year of eligibility.

My Grandfather was around during Cobb’s and Ruth’s day. Many sportswriters of that era NEVER voted for a guy, the first few times he was eligible. It was also a popularity contest, as well. I can understand Cobb, he had a mean streak; Ruth, on the other hand, was beloved.

Cobb hated Ruth because the fans liked him more than they liked Cobb. Cobb was a great player, but had a chip on his shoulder and had a hard time getting along with anyone.
That sums up my Grandfather’s opinion, as well. Sliding high into 2nd with sharpened spikes didn’t endear Cobb to many fans, either. In fairness, there weren’t a whole lot of jobs out there paying well, and players weren’t known to help each other out, as they do, now - the man you gave a tip to this season could have your job, next year.
