What jumped out at me was that the estimate was taken as the measuring standard for the accuracy of the actual answer.

LOL! Yup. Can you just imagine that “close enough” math being used to build say, the tunnel under the English Channel? Hey, the answers were “reasonable”. We’re doomed.
