More New Music - Get out of the oldies rut!!
vanity | 13 Feb 2014 | Notary Sojac

Posted on 02/13/2014 8:29:59 AM PST by Notary Sojac

Snowbound today, so it's time for a new "new music" thread. As before, I'll kick it off with three bands primarily active in the 21st century, and welcome any and all feedback (except as mentioned below).

This will be a continuing series of posts, every month or so. If you want to be pinged, please freepmail me.

If you think all this sucks and would rather listen to Zep or the Stones, I've already heard from you - please feel to start your own thread!!

Dropkick Murphys - They've been described as the love child of the Pogues and AC/DC, I think that's about right. Hard charging Boston Irish barroom punk that never lets up.
Recommended album - "Sing Loud, Sing Proud", tracks "Heroes From Our Past", "Rocky Road To Dublin".

Donna The Buffalo - Start with a jam band base, but add tight, danceable hooks, wickedly clever lyrics and a prog-bluegrass flavor.
Recommended album - "Silverlined", tracks "Locket and Key", "Forty Days and Forty Nights"

Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles - Just your basic alt-country punk garage band whose lead singer has a whiskey-soaked, dirt roads voice that will bring tears to your eyes. If you like Dave Alvin (from my first post), you'll like Sarah.
Recommended album - "Silver City", tracks "Daniel Lee", "Think Of What You've Done"

The Super Bowl halftime show was never mentioned in this thread and that would hardly be the place to discover new music. What I meant by my comment is that one should always be seeking out new experiences.

Yes, she is top of her field, I think.

I hope more were able to get through the first few seconds, long enough for that score to get moving. Wish now I had added that recommend, because I could see myself possibly going to the link, going through the first thirty seconds of so (including about 10 seconds of jumbled video lead-in) and right about there (right before it starts to get good) bailing out.

Donna the Buffalo has been around for quite a while. I love Tara Nevins!

My favorite band these days is Lambchop. Also into Alejandro Escovedo, Buddy Miller, folk, country, bluegrass, country rock, indie rock, classic soul. There is so much great music out there.

If you have not heard Russian Bandstand from 1959 you don’t know how much we lost in winning the Cold War.

I meant “Where’s the Money”. (where’s the dough?)

Their cover of “I’m an old cowhand”. is my favorite.

West Coast bar band from a bygone era.

The Super Bowl halftime ...

Like I said I could not understand the words. The tunes are not that much for me next to the rich memories as to when I heard the oldies for the first time. You don’t like the oldies and I don’t like the new stuff. We can’t all agree on everything, think how boring that would be.

But I do like the oldies...and some of the new stuff!

Not the Super Bowl halftime show however. That is not representative of the "new stuff" at all!

The album, “Turn of the Cards” is one of my favorite Renaissance albums. Annie Haslem has a wonderful voice. Their album, “Novella” also has some hauntingly sweet sounds.

a few weeks ago I used uTorrent to download a folder that contains everything they ever recorded. As much as I liked them before, some of the live stuff is simply breathtaking. As a bass player myself, I never really appreciated the quality of the work their bass player did. And you are right about her voice.

However, a couple of the albums were her 1980’s solo attempts. Just typical 80’s synth heavy vacuous attempts at hit pops. It simply didn’t work for me. At all.

Agreed. The bass work on the live version of “Ashes Are Burning” is phenomenal! I think the instrumentalist on that was Jon Camp. They’ve gone through a string of bass players.
