We're not sure about this finding. We don't know any 20-something (or young 30-something) straight couples who met in San Francisco (correction: as we were telling our co-workers about this "study," we identified two couples in the office), but beyond them, we know none.
But according to a recent study from NerdWallet, we're wrong, and San Francisco is a great place to be a single, heterosexual woman. This seems odd, as it was only in 2012, that a study by Men's Health found San Francisco was a great place to be a guy -- because of all the single women.

These types of surveys always ignore a lot of other quality-of-life issues, too. California is not everybody’s cup of tea. And San Francisco may have culture, restaurants and shopping and be close to recreational opportunities. But rent used to be really high. The climate isn’t to everybody’s liking. And I think that they have a big homeless problem, which may not sound like a big deal, but can be demoralizing day after day( I realize its not a bowl of cherries for the homeless themselves either, at the risk of sounding nasty) I personally could not tolerate the politics of the city by the bay. I know it’s not that different from Seattle, which is fun if you’re a young non-Christian liberal hipster with plenty of disposable income, not so much fun if you’re another demographic.
I dated a girl from San Francisco a few years back. She told me that it was hard to find a “regular” guy there. She stated that many were gay, or metrosexual ( pajama-boyish). So, I think a straight guy there would have an embarrassment of riches as it were.
Good God man, way too much crass information.
I worked in downtown SF for eleven years. Many single women there are corporate types: socially inept pseudo-feminist white college graduates who know they are supposed to be angry with men but aren’t sure why, or Asians with traditional parents who are under a lot of pressure to only date within their race, or the stereotypical alt-girls with facial jewelry and rigidly progressive views. I didn’t find it to be any great place to meet “nice” single women - I had much better luck later in Arizona.
In SF single straight women can just take their pick of all those nice young queer men.
In my younger days, I found the Marina District in SF to be filled with lots of gorgeous single women that were more on the Conservative side, no “ink”, good jobs and had a good head on their shoulders, good careers and the bars had a good female to male ratio and yes, it was very easy to meet women and most were very friendly and nice and I met a lot of great girls there.
No “Feminazi’s” either.
I had a lot of great times there when I was younger.
And especially during tourist season.
From what I hear, it’s even better now but I’m a bit too old for that crowd.
Sometimes, I’ll drive thru there on a weekend night and the number of beautiful girls out and about outnumber the guys.
To be young again...
Men’s Health couldn’t be bothered to consider the effects of sexual preference on that great male-to-female ratio?
You’re right about NYC. It tends to really warp male-female courtship dynamics and hetero men’s treatment of women.
What about the climate don’t people like in SF?
But you could drive 15-45 minutes away and the temp could be 30-50 degrees warmer and sunny.
I guess it all depends on your frame of reference.
Similar as the complaints about Seattle—no real “seasons”. Also earthquake and tsunami country.
Tsunami country?
Well, that’s my expression. I guess it’s a little silly, but aren’t tsunamis just underwater earthquakes?
Science isn’t my best subject, but unlike some in public office, I usually keep my mouth shut about it.
I believe a tsunami is a wave caused by something, which might be an earthquake.
I lived in SF for a number of years and, as a straight male, I have to admit that it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Of course, most of the women were carp.
