Team USA won against Russia in Olmpics Men's Ice Hockey this morning after regular time had run out, as well as a 5-minute overtime period. A shootout finally determined who won, with T.J. Oshie of the St. Louis Blues (hometown: Everett, WA) scoring the winning goal.
I know Oshie is originally from Washington, but towns like Warroad don’t get their due in terms of development of the game in the United States.
The Christian brothers of hockey stick manufacturing fame are from there, but other Warroad players like Larry Olimb, and the Marvins (of Marvin Windows, also based there) went to my alma mater, the University of Minnesota. The Warroad pipeline often leads west, but that great hockey town supplies players all over the place.
The old Section 8 in Minnesota (Warroad, Roseau, Moorhead, East Grand Forks, and many others) was great stuff in the days before two-class hockey in the state. International Falls was not in that section.
“The real American heroes are wearing camo... That’s not me.” - T.J. Oshie
That doesn’t sound like a Hillary running mate.
I was from Grand Forks. Central won the state championship for maybe. 20 years straight. Now both Red river and Central struggle. The other teams have improved. I know Warroad and Roseau have a great rivalry. I think the Christian Brothers made sticks for many years, but I think they are defunct now. John Mariuchi, of Eveleth, did much for Minnesota hockey. I remember Mayasich, Nanne, Woog and Lilyholm. I knew Chuck Norby personally. I knew Casey and Pete Ryan, who played in Colorado Springs. Casey is a doctor in Grand Forks. Tim O’keefe is the president of the UND Alumni association. Keith Christiansen played for Duluth. Anything else?
Colonel, 47 is for you. I do not know what happened.
Erickson grew up in Roseau, MN -- and he said he was only the fourth-best player on his own street. He lived down the street from the three Broten brothers -- Aaron, Neal (a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team) and Paul.
