I came to this country in the mid-eighties as a political refugee. My father fought communist forces in Vietnam for the South Vietnamese military alongside U.S. armed forces. Following the fall of Saigon, our family fled the country by boat and spent nearly three years in refugee camps in Thailand and the Philippines. We were consequently sponsored to the U.S. by a church and our family eventually settled in California.

My neighbors were Vietnamese when I was a kid. The father was a former South Vietnam Air Force officer. They were great neighbors and the kind of immigration that we benefit from. Too bad our Congress stabbed them and all the US servicemen who served there in the back. Our country’s treatment of returning Vietnam vets was disgraceful. My dad was one of those vets.

Oh, I am not against it. I think it is a clever marketing tactic. But is is still an advertisement and I think it is important to know when you are being pitched.
