For American skaters, old suits don't help

Maybe it wasn't the suits after all.

After shedding their new, high-tech skinsuits for their old-fashioned gear, American speedskaters still were without a medal at the Sochi Olympics.

Zbigniew Brodka won Poland's first gold medal in the men's 1,500 meters, finishing 0.003 seconds ahead of Koen Verweij of the Netherlands. It was one of the closest 1,500 finishes in Olympic history.

I hope they have been training at the appropriate Sochi altitude.

213 feet above sea level?

The question is:

What is the appropriate training altitude for an event at 213 ft?

Since the medals are being won by guys from The Netherlands, the answer may be below sea level.

Or it could be Hans Brinker genes.

Or maybe we need to install a rink in the parking lot on the top of Pikes Peak...

Send Nancy Pelosi over there to scold them. That will help.

We’re talking about speed skaters here ... not skiers and boarders.

That's what I'm saying. There have been successes in these Olympics, but it's primarily been among mostly skiers and boarders who aren't making excuses about things and seem genuinely grateful for the experience they're having.

Yesterday, they found a female speed skater to interview who was glad to get there, had to get online donations to pay her way. Didn't hear any attitude from her.

Those who are complaining are supposed to be the best in the world. Shouldn't part of being the best in the world be to be able to adapt to conditions? The whining about snow conditions and outfit technology is unpleasant.

Understood ... and agreed. The whole suit excuse is lame. If any athlete has a legitimate excuse it would be the skiers and boarders because of the conditions of the snow. But they haven’t said much about it ... except for the boarders during practices. Kudos to them.
