I think Windows 8.1 is fabulous, and highly recommend it.
That said, I use Linux, but Windows 8.1 is excellent.

THE STREET :
Microsoft is said to be ready to release another update -- "Windows 8.1 Update 1" -- within the next few weeks. The update is expected to make it even easier for users to hide the boxy "Metro" screen and just deal with the Windows interface. It
reportedly also will add improvements including making the system easier to navigate for keyboard and mouse users and traditional, non-touchscreen PCs.
It's believed the next major overhaul, Windows 9, will arrive sooner than originally expected. Current thinking has the operating system beta being released sometime this spring with the final release version heading to manufacturers before Thanksgiving.

Windows XP is the greatest OS evah. I have Windows 7 (because I bought a computer in 2011 that had s—tty Vista) but I long for the days of XP. Just a simple, easy-to-use, no bloatware, outstanding OS. I will love it forever, like a 70s vinyl record of Led Zeppelin.

Much of the slow sales has to do with the fact that Windows 7 is a very good OS. Why should I go to the next rendition of Windows, when the one I currently have is probably the best Microsoft has ever released?

Some days, Microsoft is the devil. I wish they would just publish a stable version of Windows and the LEAVE IT THE F%%% ALONE.
Just bought a PC for a friend, had to do EIGHTY EIGHT updates on a brand new computer, including updating the BIOS. Can you imagine a 65 year old grand mother having to update the BIOS on a brand new machine she just brought home from the store?
IMHO, Windows is NOT a consumer friendly OS, and I'm definitely not a Mac fan boy.

Win 8 has a pretty good backend, and boots up very quickly. And, once you install ClassicShell, you have a Win7 frontend and it works great.

Fortunately,
Classic Shell skillfully manages to save Win 8/8.1 from itself.
Long live XP!

The computer manufacturers are given Windows 8 to install, They are stuck. They hated it but Microsoft did not listen to them or the customers. I expect Windows 9 to be the same as 8 with minor changes.
When you buy a new pc it comes with Windows 8. That is not a actual sell of Windows 8. You bought the house but now you find you got to remodel but cannot find anything but Windows 7 furniture and fixtures.
