An influential, wealthy Houston church is considering a split from the nation's largest Presbyterian body as it is embroiled in a national debate between those who want to take a more conservative view of the Bible and those who support measures to make room for gay marriage, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The First Presbyterian Church, the oldest such congregation in the city, will vote next Sunday on whether it wants to remain with Presbyterian Church USA or join a breakaway faction that wouldn't allow for gay clergy or marriage, The Houston Chronicle reported (http://bit.ly/1dAhc7p ).

Similar debates are going on in Presbyterian churches nationwide since Presbyterian Church USA, which has more than 10,000 churches and 1.8 million members, decided to allow local congregations to choose whether they want to ordain gay clergy...

...The First Presbyterian Church has more than 3,000 worshippers at its main location in the city's museum district, as well as several smaller member churches elsewhere in Houston. It also has property and assets valued at more than $100 million and 175-year history. Some of its members sit on powerful boards and hold elected office...

Essentially Christian theology is not consistent with modern homosexual practices and values. Those “churches” that acquiesce “gay marriage” and homosexual fornication are moving away from Christianity and are embracing neo paganism.

PCUSA is off point on so many things (from abortion to supporting Palestine against Israel to the point of economic boycotts).

Pink Journalists play up that it is singular issue.

Plays well if you don’t tell them that it is another meme to push the Homosexual Agenda.

Don’t ask, don’t tell was only bad for the military, you see.

Homophobic liberals splitting from pro-homosexual liberals. (The conservatives split off in the early 1990s and most went to start an Evangelical Presbyterian congregation.

I put First Pres in the title because (First Presbyterian) would have taken much more room in the brief title.

W and Laura are members of Highland Park METHODIST. HW & Barb are Episcopalians (I don’t recall which parish, but could probably come up with that info) in Houston.

What you say is true. I grew up in this church and watched from out of state as it split apart.

Have lived in Houston area for almost 25 years and when one refers to First Pres, most people know which church you are referencing. Don’t think I’ve heard it referred to as First Presbyterian except by people who may be very new to the city or the church.

HW & Barb are members of St. Martin’s Episcopal in Houston.

And to follow up, it does appear that W was briefly a Presbyterian in Midland before he married Laura and she converted him to Methodism. He was, however, raised ‘piske.
