ABBA singer says group wore outlandish costumes to avoid tax

Swedish disco titans ABBA weren’t as fond of sequins as it may have appeared.

According to ABBA: The Official Photo Book, released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the group career-making Eurovision victory for Waterloo, the Swedish foursome adopted their outlandish dressing style in order to ensure they could deduct the cost of their costumes under Swedish tax code.

According to the book, Swedish laws allowed work wear to be tax deductible so long as it was demonstrably apparel that couldn’t be worn on the street – which, with its garish coloring and liberal use of sparkle, ABBA’s certainly was.

“In my honest opinion we looked like nuts in those years,” group member Bjorn Ulvaeus says in the book. “Nobody can have been as badly dressed on stage as we were.”

“Swedish laws allowed work wear to be tax deductible so long as it was demonstrably apparel that couldn’t be worn on the street”

This is pretty much true of the American tax code of today.

But, you have to weigh the cost of an expensive costume against the tax savings....it probably still costs you money.

Pinging taxchick on this, she’ll correct me if I’m wrong.

And, on a related note, I’m loving the costumes the ice dancers are wearing at the olympics, I’m sure they cost a pretty penny!

Wait a minute - you aren't supposed to wear sequined pantaloons, platform soles, and a bright lavender codpiece in public?

Well, I suppose that explains why the Dem mayor called me "one of us" at the last city council meeting...

The members of ABBA weren’t socialists at all. They were capitalists. They were hated by others in the Swedish showbiz industry because of it. Their manager Stig Anderson had to fight tooth and nail against the far-left nutjobs. Other Swedish artists would perform hate-filled songs railing against capitalists like ABBA. ABBA was always more successful outside Sweden, until the leftwingers fell out of fashion in the industry. Finally, they’re now getting the respect they richly deserve for their music and success.

I was always inspired by the shrewd, capitalist business tactics of Stig Anderson and ABBA, which enabled them to bypass all the socialist B.S. and become a huge, international supergroup.

Just FYI, that photo in this thread is not ABBA, but an ABBA tribute group.

Every time ABBA is mentioned, I think to myself [well, snarl, really] “And *they* got into the R&RHOF long before Alice did.

Pitiful.

Well one ( ABBA)stands for rich and (now totally proven) reprehensible and the other (ALICE) stands for Rock and Roll.

The Swedes are very proud of ABBA, I think. Hard to tell when they are excited, happy, sad or anything else. Talk about your stoic group of people.

I don't blame them, really. Their winters are...well, just like Russian winters.

OUTLAW josie wails. Gee, I wish Eastwood would make another movie. I guess he's too old now. How old is he now? 500 years old? Close.
