dictionaries ad nauseam | 20 February 2014 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

misoneism \ mis-oh-NEE-iz-uhm, mahy-soh- \ , noun
hatred or dislike of what is new or represents change.

Example sentences:
But it is necessary to note that hereditary anomaly, if it provokes an anomaly in the moral sense, also suppresses misoneism, the horror of novelty which is almost the general rule of humanity.
-- Joseph Conrad, The Secret Agent, 1907

...he saw he was the only one to stand ready for the new thing, because the others were all exhibiting symptoms of misoneism.
-- Brian Aldiss, Brian Aldiss, 1967

Etymology:
Misoneism comes from the Greek miso- + neos meaning "hatred" and "new."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

It’s really ugly, and so are the models.

Now I realize what those models remind me of-do you recall “heroine chic”?

Oops. I misspelled that. It should have been “heroin chic”.

So the drug can cause other problems that cops cannot begin to handle. I do not favor this trend. My tax $ will be hit with a law suit and one will come along. I agree, self terminating. Let them move on.

The proposed law in PA is for anyone who gets training — family and friends of addicts to be able to administer the drug and be immune from lawsuits regarding such.

The idea is that the person is likely to die. This Narcan may help save them but in that situation probably won’t hurt.

Flight was bumpy on descent but great. I love flying Southwest. Every other flight I’ve had with them has a really fun crew. A+ for you.

It is/was actually a problem of AT&T not keeping track of where and to whom they assign numbers in rural areas-after screwing with it all day and threatening to sever my 30 year relationship with AT&T, cancelling service for both my cell phone and landline, they got with the program-but if I had a dollar for every inappropriate thing I said, or time I shouted at someone yesterday, I could afford an operational furnace for this place...

Thank you for the birthday greetings. I am now a full fledged member of the half-century club. I love the cake tioga. i regret that i didn’t get into the classroom on my birthday to celebrate as the morning was swamped and i had to get away for the afternoon to get in some “group therapy” (seeing how tight of a group i could put on my targets at the shooting range) before my birthday party with family and friends at the Trail Dust steakhouse. I am very blessed to have made 50 trips around the sun on this planet and to have the great friends that I have.
