Medical offices might have gone high-tech, but some of the advice you'll hear there these days rings more nostalgic: Complain of constipation or congestion and you may get an Rx for dried plums (née prunes) or a saltwater gargle.

"The more that old remedies pan out in studies, the more likely physicians are to suggest them," said Dr. Philip Hagen, vice chair of the division of preventive medicine at Mayo Clinic. "Part of the drive is the cost of health care—trying these at home could save you a trip to the doctor." Consider these golden oldies the next time you're feeling under the weather.

Can you still get coke syrup? I remember getting that any time I had the stomach bug. Best part of being sick was getting that.

Hot toddies with lemon, honey and brandy when I had other types of colds.

I had a very deep splinter that I could not extract from my finger. Tried putting some Porters Liniment Salve on it an within a hour the rose thorn was drawn out of the wound.

Yellow mustard for muscle cramps. My wife was having problems with cramps in her hips and legs after coming home from work and reclining on the couch. Stretching and rubbing helped only so much. So one time I was reading this thing about home cures in some internet article, and it mentioned yellow mustard for cramps. Something about stuff in the mustard that added lost electrolytes or whatnot. So I mentioned it to my wife. She hates mustard, but she said she had nothing to lose.I'm pretty skeptical about these "miracle" home cures, so I was pretty blasé about the possible wonders of the mustard cure.

So the next time she came from work, sat down in her chair and started to get severe muscle cramps in one leg, I went and got out crackers, cheese, and mustard. She got it down her throat with a grimace (because she detests mustard), and then we waited. About one minute later the cramps were gone. She stared at me with a look of disbelief and said the cramps were all gone. No pain. I stared at her in disbelief myself. Maybe this was a fluke. Maybe the cramps would have disappeared without the mustard. But in the past, my wife would be in severe pain for up to half an hour before the cramps went away.

So about one week later she was sitting in her reclining seat and became afflicted with severe leg cramps again. Again I went to the kitchen and prepared the mustard, crackers, and cheese cure. Again my wife choked it down hating the taste of the mustard. And again about one minute late her cramps went away. Again she stared at me in disbelief, and again I stared back. Could the mustard cure actually work? We checked internet medical websites, and they too mentioned the mustard cure with testimonials from people who swore it worked for them as well.

So every time now that my wife comes down with cramps, we go to the mustard cure. It doesn't always work real fast, but it works faster than letting the cramps subside by themselves. I also use the mustard cure for aching leg muscles. It works for me as well as my wife. So give it a try. The worst that can happen is that you have a tasty snack of cheese, crackers, and mustard.

My husband drank Rockin Rye, then covered himself with quilts to sweat it out. He would feel much better the next day.

When my youngest brother was about 3 years of age, he broke his arm. My father, nowhere near a medical man but ever a resourceful fellow, set the bone himself and used 3 dinner knives with adhesive tape as splints until my parents could get the child into the city to the hospital. The doc was impressed with Dad’s work.

Holding a teaspoon of honey as far back on your tongue as possible for about a minute works every time for me, and you don’t have to be a contortionist. lol

Swallow and no more hiccups.

I never stopped using any of these. I guess living out here in the sticks I didn’t realize these were no longer supposed to be used.

"Wet tobacco slapped on bee/wasp stings takes the pain out and neutralizes the poison."

I wonder if that would work on scorpion stings as well ...

My mom always gave me onion juice with a little bit of honey when I had a cold. Hated it. It worked so well that just the thought of that remedy kept me from catching colds.

Wet tobacco slapped on bee/wasp stings takes the pain out and neutralizes the poison.

I have also used tobacco to stop bleeding (shaving nicks). Also, it sounds like an urban legend, but WD-40 works to cut the pain and reduce the swelling of a bee/wasp sting.

If you are all stuffed up and can’t get to sleep, plug in the Blow Dryer, set it on Hot and turn it on. Just wave it about 12 inches under your nose. Try breathing naturally through your Nose as you do it.

In less than a minute your Nose and Sinuses will be cleared up so you can get to sleep.

And remember, if you don’t want to get Pregnant, take an Aspirin and place it firmly between your Knees. You don’t need a Brand Name like Bayer, but I recommend you use the 500mg size because the .81 mg ones are hard to hold on to.

I sweat out every cold or flu bug I get close to getting. I have an extra set of sheets and blankets on hand for this. I start with the electric blanket on high until The towels are soaked through and through and then switch sheets and do it again. Took me eighteen hours last weekend. I’ve been great since then.
