Change.org Crashes After 1.5 Million People Sign Petition To Overturn Olympic Figure Skating Result

Change.org, a website that hosts public petitions, crashed Friday morning after a flood of users signed a petition to investigate a controversial Olympic figure skating result. Russia's Adelina Sotnikova won the gold medal in an upset over South Korea's Yuna Kim.

After the event, a Change.org petition called "Open Investigation into Judging Decisions of Women's Figure Skating and Demand Rejudgement at the Sochi Olympics" was started by a user named "Justice Seeker."

It went viral in a way the website had never seen before.

"The petition gained 700,000-plus signatures in just six hours and is sending traffic to our site at five times the highest previously-recorded rate," a spokesperson told the AFP.

The petition is up to 1.5 million signatures as of 6:30 a.m. eastern on Friday. The spokesperson told AFP that 90% of the traffic was from South Korea — where Kim is the country's most famous athlete.

Sotnikova had a more difficult routine and she nailed every jump, which gave her a better technical score than Kim by about five points.

Mrs. redangus and I both thought it was close, but that the Russian girl was better. We also both agreed that based on her routine and the home ice advantage she would be hard to beat. We thought the Italian girl should have gotten the silver. Bottom line, much like a dog show, the skater seen as the best coming in seldom loses regardless of the quality of their performance, which makes the results somewhat surprising.

Yuna played it very safe. The Russian skater’s performance was far more athletic and much, much more difficult.

I didn’t think it should have been even close based on the long program and the very close margin after the short program.

Yuna’s actual performance did not match her reputation. Sure, she was elegant, but the Russian skater was also very elegant while skating a far more difficult routine; and she was appropriately rewarded for it.

do they really expect someone, Obama?, would try to change the outcome?

lol

Why do people spend so much time and energy on trivial things while ignoring the important things?

and yes, I wanted Kim Yu-Na to win too. lol

You would also hope if Yuna is so good, then why not push the sport in some way.

I do know that you can’t tell everything on TV. You can actually hear a difference in skatng. The good ones are quieter.

I am sure Kim had been a recipient of unfair judgments in her favor in the past. So, all in all, it is fair, if you will.

I have as much faith in the integrity of Olympic ice skating judges as I do in a prize fight promoted by Don King, a Haitian election, or when 0bama say “let me be clear”.

On second thought, I have more faith in Olympic judges than 0bama.

How many people watched the skating worldwide? 150 million? I don’t know for sure but that would make one million on a petition a vanishingly small minority.

In ice dancing only 2 couples had any chance at the gold. Everybody else was skating for bronze. Weird sport.

Funny thing...

I was recently at a Comicon where Billy Mumy said that to the crowd attending the featured panel discussion. I told him the next day that he was the last person I expected to go "Shatner" at a sci-fi convention. He just laughed and acknowledged the SNL reference.

I think you may have confused her with someone else. There’s nothing on the net regarding her going lesbian; and if she joined that team I can’t picture them NOT shouting it from the mountain tops. That’s a woman one wants to be interested in you....

Katarina's never been married and has rarely been tied to any male love interest, although she did date Wladimir Klitschko and Richard Dean Anderson.

Her sexual preference has been a topic since the 1980s.

In Katarina's autobiography, Only With Passion, she clearly expresses a passion for males.

Heard it back a few years ago. I do know she is 48, never married has very close female business partner that she does a lot with, and has had a few very short male relationships. So who knows?

I'd volunteer, but I'm happily married.

Even if I weren't, I'm partial to red hair and freckles so I'd let someone else take the job.
