Google’s Project Tango: Five things you could do with a phone that maps your room
washingtonpost.com ^ | February 21 | Hayley Tsukayama

Google is pushing into a new world of smartphone hardware, with a new prototype phone that can create a 3D-map of a room. The prototype phone , a 5-inch device codenamed Project Tango, was revealed on Thursday. Its sensors can read a room by tracking the motion of the device itself and simultaneously mapping the environment around it with “a quarter million 3D measurements every second.”

The company has added indoor maps to its mapping products before, but this project comes from the firm’s Advanced Technology and Projects group and takes that concept to an all-new level.

I neither want nor need a phone that is smarter than I am.

My little dumb flip phone is used merely to make and receive phone calls…...

The NSA loves them though. They buy their own surveillance equipment.

My first question with anything is ... why?

I LOVE W98SE ... then forced to XP ... which I had no problem LOVING as well.

Now, this W7 .. ?

We are NOT playing well with each other.

So ... you can map your room, eh?

Can you grow a new bed by clicking on an exe. file ?

Amen to the flip phone.

I would never perform anything on the internet or watch a video or whatever while doing something else

When I'm working ... I'm working ... when I'm driving ... I'm driving ... when I'm home ... I turn on a big TV or a big computer monitor.

Why would I want to crunch my fingers on an electronic keyboard one inch square, or watch a movie on a 2 by 3 screen ?

Every one of these innovations are, to me ... just another way for someone to look at me and know about me.

Makes it easier for the SWAT team to subdue you if they don’t have to do a room to room search.

Two things they didn't list...

Give SWAT teams intel on your own home.

A great surveillance tool for thieves.

LOL, exactly. Got a cheap $9 phone from 7-11. I want my devices dumb as rocks and do what it’s supposed to, nothing more, nothing less.

If you need a map of your room, you’ve had way too much to drink.

There is a serious lack of imagination on this thread.

A hand held 3d scanner will be very handy when paired with a a 3d printer.

Very handy for remodeling projects. Scan a room, move walls around, change colors.

I don’t know how accurate it is but it could be useful for ordering parts, or even estimating materials.

I’m sure there are a lot of gaming possibilities but I’m not a gamer.

I see a lot of potential for for an inexpensive 3d scanner.

If you hacked the tech you could map out the room the cellphone user is sitting in. Would come in real handy if you were goingo raid the home to consfiscate guns.../s
