[T]he moments before police officer fatally shot newlywed firefighter in downtown KC
The Kansas City Star ^ | February 25, 2014 | Donna McGuire

As he lay bleeding on a downtown Kansas City street, newlywed Anthony Bruno mouthed “Don’t let me die” to a bystander who had rolled him on his back to check two gunshot wounds.

On the pavement nearby, Police Officer Donald Hubbard felt himself drifting in and out of consciousness. Blood dripped from his broken and battered face. He tried to get up but fell back.

The bystander, who happened to be a critical care nurse in a hospital trauma unit, could not find Bruno’s pulse. She asked Hubbard to apply pressure to Bruno’s wounds while she began chest compressions. Hubbard crawled to her as sirens sounded in the distance, according to documents released Tuesday by police.

Soon an arriving police officer asked what direction the gunman had fled.

Hubbard looked up.

“I shot him,” he said.

Multiple witnesses described elements of that scene to investigators trying to piece together what led to an off-duty Kansas City police officer fatally shooting an off-duty Kansas City firefighter who had been celebrating his November wedding in the early hours of Dec. 1....

Will his buddies buy him a round of drinks for this?

It looks justified to me. I don’t know what led up to the moment that the cop saw the need to arrest him, but the moment the firefighter started beating the cop is the moment it became a justified shooting.

I think he was gonna say, “Dont fight the cop or he will shoot you.”

Don’t pick a fight with a gun. Suicide by cop.

At some point, maybe it was justified, but it looks like incompetence to me. Why police officers now find it optimal to end up killing something is amazing.

As someone else has noticed, the final situation is a lot like the Trayvon Martin / George Zimmerman confrontation.

So, in your opinion, the cop is obligated to allow himself to be beaten to death because the other guy was a better or stronger fighter?

If you fight a cop, you deserve everything that happens to you.

Exactly what part would you describe as incompetence? If you mean the part where you make a juvenile and totally inappropriate joke in your previous post, then I agree with you.

Did you watch the video? Shouldn’t a police officer be able to handle a drunk, unarmed man without being overpowered? If a person is incompetent as this officer maybe they shouldn’t be out on the street for their own good?

I would describe allowing yourself to be overpowered by an unarmed drunk man as being incompetent. I’m just talking about how police are supposed to be able to handle themselves.

Why would an armed police officer end up rolling around on the ground with a suspect? Doesn’t that violate the protocol of how this is supposed to be handled?

Looks justified. I don't know why he was arresting the guy, but whatever the reason, the firefighter was being fairly uncooperative, and then started beating the cop over the head. Any citizen in the same situation would have been justified in applying deadly force, as the police officer did.

Tag him and bag him. He was clearly stronger than the officer and had the cop not shot the guy, he himself might have been killed. The cop did right IMHO.

“The Brunos had imbibed as well, but neither was drunk, Stephanie later told police.”

Stephanie is the wife of the “drunk.”

No mention of blood alcohol levels.

Some people become a-holes when they’ve been drinking. If the cop was the type of cop that would use his gun first, there wouldn’t have been a wrestling match in the first place.

You just seem the type of guy that likes cops being killed unnecessarily.

I consider most of what you post on this forum to be incompetent —

Why do you allow yourself to do it???

Why did the security guard (off duty LEO) attempt to arrest this guy?
He was off duty. Working for someone other then the City though in his uniform.
He left the place he was working to walk after the man even though the man at that time was seemingly doing nothng but walking down the street.

DITTO. Cop was armed security and in uniform. Fireman was too drunk to know better. Once he broke the grip and start striking the officer in the head hard, officer must stop it or he can lose concience and the attacker may access his gun. Shooting is justified.
