Great-Grandfather Picks Up Wrong Child From School, Boy's Mother Enraged

Days after a great-grandfather brought the wrong boy home from school, the boy's mother is calling administrators incompetent and demanded that the school take action.

Angela Stone said her 5-year-old son was waiting for the bus at Sterling Community School on Friday when a man walked up to him and mistook the little boy for his own great-grandson and brought the boy to his house.

Only then did he realize he had the wrong child.

"Once the grand great-grandmother sees the boy and removes his hat, she realizes it's not her great-grandson and calls the school to say the great-grandfather has taken the wrong kid," Stone said during an emergency Board of Education meeting held in Sterling on Tuesday night.

It's a pretty easy fix: If a child is being picked up from school, a parent or guardian needs to send the child to school with a note.

No good deed, goes unpunished.

I’m surprised the school didn’t already have a similar policy.

Yeah, wow.... I would have thought the kid would have said something when he didn’t recognize the man that was leading him away. Maybe he hadn’t gone through the “stranger danger” training yet.

Unless it is some sort of race to see how extreme they can go in their outrage, (that seems to be a pretty popular sport in this country) I don't see why they so worked up over the police not being called.

When my grandkids first see me, they climb me like kittens climb a Christmas tree. I don't think I could pick up the wrong kids.

I do not blame the mother one bit. Can you imagine the fear she had when she couldn’t find her child? The Great Grandfather should be banned from picking up the kid again.

Wow. I would be outraged, too, if my son were sent home with a total stranger. By this time of year, children have routines. Teachers know the routines. Any change from the routine should require communication from a parent. Thankfully, it sounds like no harm came to the child.

Oh come on. I hope you never have your child picked up by a stranger. I guess the next sex offender who grabs your kid takes him around the block a few times and then returns him to you will be no big deal to you? We have no idea what this Great Grandfather was capable of. We do not live in the World of ice cream and candy everywhere that you seem to believe.

Was it Kenny from South Park?

ohcomeon. The few days I substituted in preschool and kindergarten, I could see how this could happen. The rules we went by were so strict that a security guard was there to make sure it was a "known" picking up the child. So the wrong kid recognizes someone else's grandpa and jumps over to him? Grandpa takes the wrong kid?

Lighten up. It's not like they let a stranger take that child. And get grandpa an eyeglass appointment.

I'm going to go out on a limb and just guess here, but I don't think a sex offender is going to call the school to tell them they gave him the wrong kid.

If judging that someone who is in the act of doing the right thing is actually trying to do the right thing is living in a world of “ice cream and candy” then I guess I'm guilty.

Better than living in a world of faux outrage and stupidity.

I think the government should provide every child with a 24/7 monitor. And the monitor should have a monitor who also has a monitor.

I heard the mother on the phone. I think she over reacted, AND I AM QUITE SURE SHE IS REPRESENTED BY ATTORNEYS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING OUT OF THIS.

The report doesn’t mention how old great-grandpa is. My dad is 90 years old. He doesn’t see or hear very well and there are times when he has trouble concentrating. I would never entrust my grandchildren into his care under any circumstances. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that this old guy had similar limitations. Maybe the family needs to re-think their options.

Everybody is enraged these days!

BTW - this happened in Connecticut where there have been a lot of snow storms. The kids are probably all bundled up in snow suits with hoods and maybe it was snowing. The kid probably thought he was a teacher and walked home with him. It may not be as weird as it sounds.
