Iranian grad student at Georgia Tech burns self with Molotov cocktail, media yawns

As you read the following, keep in mind that this happened three weeks ago. The only reason I know about it is because Glenn Reynolds linked to it this morning.

WXIA in Atlanta, Feb. 5:

The FBI says a Georgia Tech graduate student was burned by a Molotov cocktail at his apartment in the 200 block of 10th Street, not far from Piedmont Park.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said Saamer Akhshabi suffered third-degree burns over 90 percent of his body. Lighter fluid and a charred pillow and mattress were found inside the apartment, along with the Molotov cocktail and several plastic bottles filled with gasoline and kerosene.

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, along with the Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Fire-Rescue are working to investigate the circumstances behind the incident. Homeland Security was also notified of the explosion.

But according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle on Feb. 6: "Officials: No sign of terrorism in fire at Ga. Tech student’s apt." Other than, y'know, the Iranian guy making Molotov cocktails.

Why was he making them? I have no idea, because this only made the local news in Atlanta and there was no follow-up. Nobody's curious about why this guy was making firebombs in his apartment.

If only there were some way to connect him to the Tea Party. But that seems unlikely after you look at his Twitter account, @sam_pers:

Four tweets in all, three of them about how awesome Obamacare is. Nope, no way he's a teabagger. Never mind!

#GetCovered... in third-degree burns.

According to Akhshabi's personal page at the Georgia Tech site, he's "interested in Internet evolution, evolutionary network modeling, and adaptive video streaming." He forgot "making improvised incendiary devices."

Why was he doing that? How did he burn himself so badly? Just goofing around?

Must be. He's one of the good guys. Move along, wingnuts.

Well, OK. Just remember, though, that if you’re soaked in gasoline, you’re not ready to throw it.

True.

AND ...

If you're in your own apartment, you're not ready to throw it.

We’re importing enemy combatant “students” because why, again?

new world order. it's the only way to build a clandestine international terror network, which is one of the key tools in their "toolbox".

international banking and terror have always gone hand-in-hand.

Take apart a book of safety matches. Turn the cover inside out and fold it over the matches, with the striking surface on the inside. Rubber-band the thing together. Squeeze the cover as you pull it off, and the match-heads will light.

That looks like something to practice doing before it counts, and without the fire-bomb. Easier said than done ...

Oh c’mon lots of people put together molotov cocktails in their apts here. Everyone’s doing it.

Third degree burns on 90% of his body. I call that a good start. :-)

I didn’t think you could survive third degree burns over 90% of your body. I thought the limit was about 2/3. But maybe treatment has progressed since last I heard.

This may to a great extent just be a media foul up. That is, while US law prohibits storing gasoline in bottles, it is pretty common elsewhere in the world. And many Asians ignite fires in the middle of their floor carpet, as sitting on the floor around a pot is how they usually eat.

They also tend to wipe their dirty hands on the carpet while eating. Landlords just love this stuff.

But, yes, Occam’s razor suggest he was making bombs.

I guess that depends on your landlord. ;-)

There’s a youtube out there of some jackass (palestinian, IIRC) torching himself with a poorly constructed molotov cocktail. The rag didn’t seal the neck properly; when he raised it over his head to throw, flaming liquid poured out on his back.

Styrofoam will dissolve into gasoline but the gel won’t stick to things very well .. it will also take A LOT of styrofoam,, Some plastic peanuts are labeled “earth safe” and may not be made of polystyrene. liquid soap perhaps? As a safety measure would think the rag would not need to penetrate the cap as long as the container is readily breakable. Motor oil has a high flash point... and might compromise ignition... If I was an Iranian grad student I’d concentrate on delivery methods that would put more distance between me and the target ,, a giant slingshot? a compressed air potato (bottle) cannon?

So (a) did he get covered? And (b) did the hospital accept his coverage?
