San Francisco is not the city that knows how to tip, according to a survey.
A poll of coffee purchases made by Square reveals that only 34.2 percent of San Francisco purchases were accompanied by a tip, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. That was the eighth-lowest out of nine cities surveyed.
In Tampa, 62 percent of coffee drinkers tipped on a Square purchase, according to the survey. Even New Yorkers did better, with about 41 percent of coffee drinks topped off with a tip.
Only Chicago was worse -- there, baristas get extra cash 12.3 percent of the time, the news survey revealed.
I’m a good tipper, but I won’t tip anyplace I have to wait in line and carry my beverage to the table. That’s called self service for a reason.
Ditto. I don't just voluntarily pay extra at what amounts to a self-service lunch counter.
If you're a waiter/waitress/server/whatever and you're juggling a bunch of customers and you manage to do a terrific job with a smile, I'll lay it on you. You've earned a nice 'thank you'. Also- if the place is good enough (food, drink, service) that I want to come back repeatedly and for you to remember me, I'll leave a memorable tip.
A few places I've liked, they have a glass of what they know I like in front of me before I settle into my chair. :-)
Oh- forgot to mention. I’m on that other coast now, but I’m a fifth-generation San Franciscan.
Typical libs. They want to do all this do-gooding, but not with THEIR money.
Same here. Tipping for coffee in a glorified styro cup that you paid for at the cashier. Seriously..
...indoor panhandling
Oh, those letters with the cute heart is so nice, let’s tip! s/
SF’ers love to scream about how many generations their family has lived in SF. The other thing they love to talk about —other than the glories of tolerance— is how they absolutely cannot stand Los Angeles.
If I’m served, I tip. If it is self serve, nope. Good service, I tip well. If I’m on a date, I make sure I tip extra well. :)
I don’t tip the person who sells me a hamburger; why would I tip the person who sells me a cup of coffee?
If I decided to arm LA would you arm San Fran we could start a war and get rid of a few libs.. j/k of course.
I have many friends who are fairly militant when it comes to tipping.
Disgusting...really
These helpers do their best but, sometimes, are at the mercy of the kitchen or incompetent “runners “
I start my tips at 20% and work backwards from there.
Militant in what sense?
Liberals are mean people
What a stupid story; rating coffee tipping.
That said, liberals are less charitable.
They start from the bill and work forward... To ascertain, if, even a tip is warranted
Sometimes, the waiter has zero control over the tempo of the kitchen.
I work backwards, from the benefit of the doubt
Liberals are cheap? Yes, it’s THEIR money and not other people’s money. Liberals are the worst of cheapskates.
That said, Democrats don't value working folks - they see them as chumps. Why would they want to give a tip to a chump when they can blame the Republicans for the chumps who don't make a lot?
