Will Windows 9 be the New Windows 7?
Yahoo/Consumer Reports ^ | 3-1-14

It hasn't been long since Microsoft upgraded Windows 8 with Windows 8.1. But that doesn't mean it's too soon to start speculating about Windows 9. And Windows users are definitely speculating, even though rumor has it the next version won’t be out until April 2015.

We asked Consumer Reports' Facebook followers what their expectations are for Windows 9. A few are looking for "Windows 7" (and even "Windows XP"). But others would like to see Windows continue to evolve, with better security, less resource hogging, and an even simpler interface.

If it’s anything like Windows 8, I will be an Apple user.

I am still using Windows 7 and like it very much so it seems to me that Microsoft could do a lot worse than have to Windows 9 be the new Windows 7. I managed to skip the worst of the Windows bombs (Vista, Windows 8) with the exception of ME. What a turd that was.

Mail should support POP3 mail.

Uh, no. If you want your mail accessible by multiple platforms POP3 is not the way to go.

There really isn't much left that I do on a regular basis that I can't do under Linux. Some games, maybe. I'm using Win8.1 to post this and it's adequate but not enough better than 7 for me to pay for separately. If it hadn't come with the box I wouldn't be using it.

Metro must die.

I’m updating a manual using a win7 computer so it looks new (screen captures etc.). But right next to it is my 32bit winxp computer. The win7 pc is a 64bit processor, years newer supposedly faster than my winxp box.

Winxp box is very noticeably faster than the newer more powerful win7 pc.

I know this is anecdotal, but it is what it is.

How many machines got ‘bricked’ by the change because they don’t have drivers for the new system?

The last windows I used was vista that came on a Lenovo thinkpad. I scrubbed it and installed Linux . Then some time later, I bought a pocket computer, music player and cell phone; iPhone 3GS. Then a Mac mini, then an iMac, then an iPad.

An iPad 3 and iphone 5 later, and I’m all Apple. The Thinkpad still runs Linux, but I hardly use it anymore.

I don’t buy the latest and greatest every time a new model comes out, but Apple builds quality stuff. My 3GS sits in a dock connected to my home theater box, and I play all my synced music off it. And it’s unlocked, so I can put in a pay as you go SIM card and have a backup phone when needed.

If I had all the computing power and choices there are today, back when I was messing with TRS-80’s and PC DOS 1.0...... Wow!

I would have had a frick’n field day.

Now I just want it to work. I’ve done my time in Gatesworld - I’m done!

Vista was light years ahead of windows 8. I have a windows 7 gamer and use windows 7 at work but I still prefer XP to both vista and windows 7. After four or five days of working with a windows 8 laptop that replaced my vista laptop when it broke I returned it and went with a mini Mac for momma. I am using an I Pad. That said I am not a real apple fan either. All I want from the computer geniuses is better performance without having to constantly learn a new user interface every time they come out with a new version. I went with the Mac because the user interface was closer to what my wife was used to and she is nervous around computers. I will NEVER buy another Windows machine again until a familiar interface is restored. Who needs all this frustration all the time.

Is there any FReeper who knows about and uses Windows Server?

I know people have a tendency to speak from experience, but every release of Microsoft Server, starting with Windows NT 3.51, has been a wonderful product!

Windows Server 2012 R2 is great. I even use one for a desktop/high end production workstation. I run Hyper-V server and have installed virtual machines running Linux, different versions of Windows client (XP, Vista, 7 and 8). Today I installed Linux Mint... Can’t get the virtual network card to up but I’m working on it.

I love Storage Spaces, work folders and domain join. Just excellent productivity concepts keeping up with corporate America.

And the Active Directory is king.

Just wanted to say something positive about Microsoft that few rarely discuss (or know about?) here.

I got it with a new PC.

That’s not a bad idea, though.

I actually use Linux most of the time, but I was pleasantly surprised with Windows 8.1.

I like it.
