I've Received a Copyright Infringement Notice at my business..what do I do?
Me | 3/3/14 | Louiswu

Posted on 03/03/2014 5:24:28 PM PST by The Louiswu

I received a notice of Copyright Infringement at my office today. It says someone downloaded a file called Let It Snow on 2/22/14 at 7:49GMT and the ip address listed is 173.23.1.91. I am really concerned and don't know what my first step should be in combating this problem. Does anyone have any advice about this, I would greatly appreciate any help with this matter.

Best advice I can give you? Don’t solicit legal advice on the internet.

First thing I’d do is check to make sure it’s not a scam. Did the company against whom you supposedly infringed send you a letter? I’d take it to a copyright lawyer if they’re threatening any form of legal action.

I’m not asking for legal advice, something more general, like has anyone had a similar experience.

My first suspicion would be a scam. My second suspicion would be a scam.

Couldn’t it also be a scam though?

I've found that there are many intelligent people on this site with views and experiences similar to my own.

I suggest you search Google using the term “copyright troll.” I suspect that you are probably a potential victim.

7:49GMT is 2:49 EST.

Unless you were served notice by a registered letter, or personally by a process server, my first inclination would be towards a scam. My second and third inclinations are also towards scam.

I received one of these from my residential provider. Called to verify and sure enough it was legit. I sent a formal response indicating I took steps to protect the wifi router and that was the end of it.

You might try google-ing (whatever search engine you use) the title of the notification. There are some very authentic-looking scams out there.

I've received a few of these letters and I do own a computer repair shop with a network and good security...maybe not good enough. We change our passwords once a month.
