Mardi Gras is Tuesday, March 4, and this year as part of our Fat Tuesday celebration, we asked recipe developer Raquel Pelzel to create a homemade version of MoonPies, a classic treat often tossed from the floats during parades in the Gulf Coast.
Although the MoonPie was born in Tennessee, its really a staple in the Gulf SouthMobile, Alabama, even drops an illuminated MoonPie for New Years Eve, so we thought who better than Pelzel, who worked with David Guas on his book, DamGoodSweet: Desserts to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth, New Orleans Style, to help us create this recipe.

He is from Washington, so he may as well be a Yankee.
Well, not to discourage the kitchen challenged folk but a box 36 original moon pies is available from Sam’s for a little over $8 pre tax. Probably cost more than that to make 12 from this recipe although without all the fun making them.
Scooter Pies are better
Try putting a Moon Pie in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Out of this world.
My daughter has a T-shirt that says “Moon Pies and Dr. Pepper. It’s a Southern Thing”. Good combo!
Never mind. Make that “RC Cola and Moon Pies”.
>> Blue Bell Ice Cream
The factory tour in Brenham, Texas needs to be taken at least once in your life.
Actually, I had a few. Don't dislike RC, but don't drink any soft drinks. One of those health nuts? Yep.
.
Untrue and unfair. SHE is from WA.
One set of grandparents and cousins are deep, deep Mississippi/Louisiana southerners. I love the south, creole cooking, soft-shell crabs. Pralines in my youth. However, and this is where my West Coastness shows, I'm a health food nut. Don't drink, don't smoke, very little sugar, salt, fat. Bored, probably boring, but gee whiz, I'm healthier than the proverbial horse. Could probably get away with a moon pie or two, but after years of food discipline, they honestly do not appeal to me.
Y'all can have my share, Shugah.
Since I'm a "little lady," I'd expect you to protect me, kingattax.
With a bag of peanuts in the cola?
Moon Pies are a power-up in Redneck Rampage... :-)
I found a Shasta black cherry soda can up on the Stanislaus a few years back. It was the kind you had to open with a “church key” opener. The irony was that the contents read like it was one of todays organic health drinks. Cane sugar, real black cherry and black cherry extract, no artificial stuff/preservatives...
I haven’t had a good moonpie in SO long!
Hey, I'm born and raised Southern, and I believe in healthy eating. However, it's good to treat yourself a little. We all have only so long on this planet.....God has our days numbered.
That said, I can't handle moon pies because I don't like marshmallow, but I would sure as heck love to try some Blue Bell.
I can!!
Keep them in the south!
please hold my moon pie, ma’am, and i would gladly protect you :)
