Enough prescription painkillers were prescribed in 2010 to medicate every American adult around-the-clock for one month.

That has simply go to be pure nonsense. That means that 8.4% of the entire US populace would be active addicts to opiates. Not buying it.

It’s probably true because of tolerance in chronic users. Doses that would kill a new user.

Not really, because after taking the drug for a while, larger and larger doses are needed, so a single abuser may be taking a lot of pills each day.

And because their black market value is high, with some estimates between $80-100 per pill, heroin, which is both readily available, and costs a quarter or less that much, becomes irresistible.

Though I like to add the note that a drug abuse expert said that “While they think they will just smoke or snort heroin, within a couple of weeks, they are injecting it.”

This is really getting out of control in a hurry.
