The dreaded Obama introduction to 'Cosmos' lasts less than 30 seconds
See body of thread for link | March 10, 2014

Like many of you here, I was looking forward to watching Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey last night.

But, also like many of you here, I was not looking forward to Obama's anticipated long-winded introduction, therefore I set my DVR to record the show, so that I could fast-forward through the intro. (some of you even declined to watch the show because of this intro)

However, when it came time to watch the show, I was pleasantly surprised, and a little bit embarrassed at my overreaction. The dreaded intro lasted less than 30 seconds!

Well, whaddaya know. Obama finally gave us a gift, sort of. Of course, a better gift would have been for him to not speak at all! :-D

I’ll be watching the next one. :)

Did you happen to catch the commercials?

Several very pro-American, bright future ones.

Every year, Scientific American magazine selects the top ten people who have advanced science and technology for that year:

"This year’s Scientific American 10 pays tribute to the exceptional foresight and accomplishment of a select group whose achievements, particularly during the past year, stand out from those of their peers...This combination of leadership and inventiveness exhibited among the Scientific American winners for 2009 serves as a template for how we might consider tackling the most seemingly intractable problems of resource depletion, inadequate health care and desperate educational need."

Obama was selected as one of the ten, in June 2009.

I cancelled my subscription.

It was the bashing of religion, saying that science and religion are in conflict, that got offensive. Bash Catholics, oh, throw in bad Protestants, too.
Carl Sagan was an atheist, but he didn’t get into the anti-Christian, socialist stuff nearly this badly on the original Cosmos.

That’s about 2 minutes longer than I wish to listen to him.

I have to agree...I thought the show went out of its way to cast faith as anti-science and unjust. I wonder if future episodes will be as condemning of the lives lost in the pursuit of science.

Family guy is hilarious. Particularly after visiting Colorado. Simpsons, Futurama are good as well.

Steve Urkel, perhaps?

They did have some good articles, and I miss those, but their liberal bias go to be too much for me. They’re big global warming Kool-Aid drinkers too.

Did Carter open the last Cosmos series?

If not it shows how vain Obama really is.

They knew the show was airing on Fox, and they put an intro by Obama in anyway. It was deliberately political, and it was a bad idea.
Prediction: Their ratings for next week will be even lower.

Michio Kaku would have been a better host. He has a track record, too, with shows like Sci Fi Science and How the Universe Works.

Carl Sagan’s original Cosmos was far superior.

The music in this Cosmos 2 was so annoying.... we did not need the dramatic loud music as if we were watching scary science fiction movie.

This was a disappointment on a variety of levels.

22 I QUIT watching it after 5 minutes. WHY? Because the narrator’s voice was horrible. He has a tendency to drop syllables from his words and I had to strain to decipher. NOT WORTH IT. Affirmative action strikes (and FAILS) again!

I agree about the narrator's voice. I missed quite a few words also. Folks used to good naturedly razz Carl Sagan about "billions and billions", but you could easily understand him. I thought the producer and narrator went down the schmaltzy trail when he produced Carl Sagan's journal and autographed book to the narrator when the narrator visited him at Cornell when he was 17 - and it worked. It put a lump in my throat.

On the whole, it did not measure up to the original 1980 version. Sagan's use of Vangelis' new age soundtrack has stayed in my mind all these decades since. Nothing in this v2.0 edition that even is close to being memorable. But I will probably watch the 2nd installment just to see if it improves.

BTW, the composer is Alan Silvestri. He has an impressive list of credits going back over forty years.
