"'We are just complying with safety regulations,' said Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit spokeswoman Carolyn Glendening. 'It's a decision that's been made by federal regulators. It's not a discretionary matter.'"

Another reason to limit the power of the Federal Government.

It’s albino, so it is not a tree of color. You can’t make the argument “trees of color and bushes most severely affected” so it will have to go.

Does this tree have seeds? If so, start a few, and problem solved.

SMART has made the offer to let arborists take cuttings for propagation, which *sounds* good, but apparently you have to take cuttings from exactly the right areas on the tree or you won’t get the albinism in the genes. Also of course the mother tree at that point would be dead so if none of your cuttings live, or are true to the mother plant, well, sucks for you, eh?

I’m so glad our government is protecting us from rogue albino redwoods. Aren’t you?

Conservationist and conservative have the same, uh, roots, if you’ll pardon the pun.

As a Marin County resident, I’d love to see this train - though a big plus is that it stops in Larkspur and doesn’t descend into the darkness of San Francisco. That said... I’d scrap the whole damn thing if I had to choose between the train and the tree.

Moving the tree would be tough, but it could be done. There’s a gigantic redwood grove not far from there called “Muir Woods” - perhaps you’ve heard of it - where the tree could thrive and be seen by millions.

But we’re talking SERIOUS bureaucracy here! SMART, the National Park Service, Caltrans... Good God! You gotta love the “It’s out of our hands” attitude these damn bureaucracies take.

Now if we can just propagate a few saplings next to the $60 billion “bullet-train-to-nowhere” we will have accomplished something.

Oh... and if you’d like to make your voice heard to the powers that be... SMART’s email is...
