knarf, I am so sorry! I am glad the Red Cross has been to help. Don’t hesitate to call them if you need more help. Depending on the branch, more may be available… as in clothing, and furniture. Often times they will give you a referral to a local charity thrift store that will give you what you need. (I am a volunteer, and we do that here.)

I will pray for your family my FRiend.

Sorry for your loss - I’ve been there.

Sounds like you have the basics covered for now. A word of wisdom, don’t let your pride get in the way of asking for help. Church and community organizations (Salvation Army, Red Cross, etc) can be of great assistance during this time of struggle.

Since you already own the land, you may be able to work with either a modular home manufacture and/or a local bank and get a construction or home loan for a modular built on a foundation or basement. I have found that banks and insurance companies treat modular on basement houses more like a “real” house and will insure or finance like a regular home. This often allows you to look at a 30 year mortgage instead of just a 10 year for a trailer. One of my friends went with Clayton homes and they have a nice house with a 30 year fixed. Like you, they already owned the land and were able to get their starter home built for just under $80,000. His monthly payment was less than $600.

Another possibility would be to build your own home. The most viable option for most people is the compressed earth block (CEB). This is a means of using local materials (sand / dirt) to make your own blocks. Another possible option is rammed earth. Both of these methods allow you to put in a lot of sweat equity to build your house. You will generally need some place to stay and it does take a lot of muscle but many people have gone this route to recover from a total loss of their housing. Here is a web page to get you started if that is what you want to do: http://www.dirtcheapbuilder.com/

Again, sorry for your loss

Sorry about your loss.

A number of years ago a neighbor's house burned and my wife and I had a long conversation about what if it had happened to us. We agreed the worse things we could loose were our photos. In those pre-digital days we began by storing our photo negatives in our bank safety deposit box. I have now been backing up our digital photos on cloud storage and on large capacity flash drives also stored in our safety deposit box.

I’m unfortunately not in a position to help in any way except to offer prayers. Glad your family and furbaby made it okay!

Man, I am sorry for your loss, but thankful to God that you and your family (that includes the dog by the way) are safe.

Houses, and things can (eventually) be replaced. People can’t be.

Knarf, been there, done that.

Actually, the most amazing thing was after the fire all the people I had known for YEARS, even my best friend, who told me they were in terrible fires and I had never known! As you talk to people about it, you will find more folks than you realize will have gone through similar and worse things and they just move beyond it. The truth is, as long as no one gets seriously hurt, it just recedes. And it is amazing how the Lord uses life circumstances to move you along different, and better, paths.

Will say a prayer for you. My fire was 20 years ago and I lost my house. And it was a glorious and one of a kind house. But actually God’s hand was in it, and it’s all good.
