On Wednesday, ESPN announced that Brent Musburger will leave his partnership with Kirk Herbstreit on ABC's Saturday Night Football broadcast to join Jesse Palmer to call games for ESPN's new SEC Network.
It is believed that ESPN did not want to lose Chris Fowler's services in a contract year, and the GameDay host is the favorite to be in the booth with Herbstreit. There may be a bigger role for Rece Davis as well.

I think the SEC deserves better than a 74 year old play by play guy.

Pussburger was the originator of the "This is important because I am here" attitude that is now commonplace amongst network talking heads.

I did enjoy when he called Cal-Berkeley tree huggers and hippies during a game a few years back. It is on YouTube but watching and hearing it live was amusing.

I have no idea why these networks feel guys like Musburger and Keith Jackson should have lifetime appointments to broadcast games.
Musburger is 75, retire already!

Mouse-Rat is a perv. Remember how he was drooling all over the college qb’s gal friend? I think he had a Chrissy tingle.

These guys are not hired to do play by play. They are hired to fill what would otherwise threaten to be dead air time, when there is nothing newsworthy to say. Their special talent is filling the airwaves with inconsequential but semi-interesting drivel between plays, and lead-ins to ads. The Brent Musbergers of the world have no more to do with football than cabbage patch dolls.

We don’t want that hard leg in the SEC. Remember when he was drooling over AJ McCarron’s girlfriend during the bowl game?

I heard somewhere that Musburger got in a fistfight with a former co-announcer.

That was with Jimmy the Greek during their time reporting the NFL.

I think Mushberger was an old time sports hack out of Chicago back in the late 60s or early 70s. He was first inflicted on national television viewers when he hosted The NFL Today on CBS with Irv Cross and Phyllis George. That was a thoroughly awful puff piece show that masqueraded as a sports show. The only thing it was good for was as my Sunday “alarm clock” when I was in college. When I heard it on the TV in our house I figured I might as well roll out of bed.

That explains why the ‘talent’ sticks with it, but not why the networks continue with keeping them.
Bring in some young talent and ratings will not be negatively impacted.

Well, they are trying to slow the game down in the sec, maybe Musburger will be able to broadcast the game and make it seem to be in real time.
