You know it has been a cold winter when some Upper Peninsula cities are breaking records that are over 100 years old.
We can talk about the average temperature for the winter months of December, January, and February. That is one way to tell how cold the winter has been. For example, Marquette had an average temperature of 7.5 degrees this winter, which is a new record for Marquette. That does indeed sound cold.
But a better way to get a feel for the record cold is to count the number of days below zero. We don't really have a feel for how cold an average temperature is, but we all know below zero temperatures are cold.
Iron River has dipped below zero 74 days this winter. 72 percent of the days this winter have dropped below zero in Iron River. Records go back 114 years there, and Iron River has never had that many days below zero in all the years of record.
Ironwood has been below zero 69 days, which is the most in 113 years of record keeping.
Houghton just tied its record of 47 days below zero, dating back to 1916-1917.
Manistique has eclipsed its old record of 45 days below zero by 11 days. That record may be tough to ever beat again. It goes in the same category as Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak.
There could be two more nights below zero across the Upper Peninsula; This Saturday night and Sunday night.
Then it looks like the below zero weather will be done for the winter. It's about time.

Southern WI had two years in a row of 100” of snow. It sucked. And it fell during Christmas, so that was tough on my Christmas Tree sales. This past year was WONDERFUL as the temps didn’t start dipping to dangerous until after Christmas, and we didn’t have too much snow all at once this year.
‘This Old Dump’ fared very well considering she’s 108 years old this year. Heating was less of an expense than I thought it would be and other than a frozen sink in the main bathroom, I had no problems. Lucky!

And this is from 2009. the antarctic ice is much greater now than then so sea levels would have lowered if anything since then.Antarctic ice is at the greatest level ever measured.
