Support is ending soon {Microsoft Windows XP}
Microsoft ^

Posted on 03/15/2014 10:42:51 AM PDT by shove_it

On April 8, 2014, support and updates for Windows XP will no longer be available. Don't let your PC go unprotected.

What is Windows XP end of support? Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years. But now the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources toward supporting more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.

As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to help protect your PC.)

If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.

What does it mean if my version of Windows is no longer supported?

Which version of Windows am I running?

Oh rubbish.

Linux is just about the buggiest thing out there. I run a real machine and several VM's under various flavors of Linux and there are kernel and lib patches to Linux far more often than Windows; in addition to which there is nowhere near the array of hardware nor the level or sophistication of software supported by Windows. Software development environments -- which is what I do for a living -- under Linux are a complete joke.

Linux is fine for very limited uses. It isn't appropriate for consumers at all, no matter how little ability or need they may have.

Buy Windows 7 and change the theme to XP : )
To change the look or if you have Windows 8 to improve it then go here for Start8 and ModernMix and different themes.
http://www.stardock.com and http://www.wincustomize.com

Windows 8 is what Microsoft should stop support on! They are doubling down on 8 by keeping the layout and only making minor changes to the look of it. Not allowing you to download the 8.1 as a separate file (where your license works) (there are hacks around this) The 8.1 update is 3.6GB! How would you like to do that any time you needed to install Windows for 1 pc let alone for multiple ones.

Read this from a guy who writes those big how to books on Windows. He finally came out and stated that Windows 8 is a disaster!

As opposed to several virtual machines. And ... Wow ... I will put my knowledge of Linux up against yours any time.

That’s OK. You already admitted failure with it. I don’t have any problems at all with it.
And yes, I also use “real” unix via SSh on a server.

I use FF 11.0 on my XP Pro. I never update any of the Win 8 stuff that comes on Tuesdays and everything works just fine. I use AdBlock Plus and NoScript for Addons.

I figure most of the updates are to cover browser snooping or increased hp in ActiveOn type programs which I don’t use.

All of the US railroads’ common denominator for “Positive Train Control” communications servers is Red Hat Linux.

When has Microsoft offered any support for any product? The best help a person can hope to find is via internet searches and stumbling on some blog.
