Swedes tire of tax cuts as welfare state shows strains

To glimpse Swedish angst under its picture postcard prosperity, look no further than film director Lisa Ohlin, who has enjoyed years of tax cuts in an economy the envy of Europe. Homes in her Stockholm neighborhood cost around $1 million.

Voters like Ohlin are returning to faith in cradle to grave welfare after eight years of center-right Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who cut income, wealth and corporate taxes. Sweden’s tax burden has fallen by four percentage points of GDP—now lower than France. …

They aren’t tired of tax cuts. They are tired of having to work for a living.

um... news flash your schools are now struggling because of the influx of 3rd worlders, not because of tax cuts.

If she knows a school that needs money — let HER and her friends donate to it.

Did I wake up on the wrong planet this morning? What the hell is this backwards drivel? I want my cradle to grave welfare state back? Taxes are too low because France’s taxes are higher?

Somebody needs to have some sense beat into them with a battle ship.

Week-long riots last year in Stockholm from largely poor immigrants put inequality under the spotlight.

I think we just detected the problem.

Tired of tax cuts???

Nice way to classify it... I think they are more tired of the Welfare State.

I cannot imagine ANYONE saying “[groan] I wish i had less money!”

The problem is that people with jobs don’t have time to go protest to the government for more free things.

My gut reaction is that most Swedes are not nearly as stupid as Reuters.

yep, the tricky part is, it takes a long time to run out of other peoples money, and people can’t seem to connect the dots after a long period of time.

Except... when you suddenly get a major influx of takers. This greatly speeds up the process.

When the money finally does run out, you got a real crisis though.

oh, and another thing that prolongs the process is that governments seem to be able to go into almost infinite debt. If governments weren’t allowed to go into debt, the process of running out of other peoples money would be much MUCH quicker.

Of course this is the opinion of Rooters, which is about as unbiased as Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

The truth is that Sweden was driven almost to the point of breaking by the former socialist government, yet their more conservative party was too timid in slashing the welfare state, just trying to repair it and make it more efficient.

Had they instead entirely dismantled it, Sweden would by now be experiencing unparalleled prosperity. And this should be fair warning to conservative Republican Americans.

Unless we completely obliterate the past 100 years of progressivism, we will have only removed half of the malignant tumor, and it will just begin regenerating itself. And conservatives will be dearly punished for it.

film director Lisa Ohlin

I wonder how much of her funding comes from government "arts" grants? Arts grants which would be hard to justify in a tight budget?

higher taxes on working swedes will surely support the muslim immigrants in the style to which they want to become accustomed, buy good schools, and restore safe cities and burbs

right?

RE: Swedes tire of tax cuts as welfare state shows strains

Why can’t they tire of the welfare state instead?
