The family of Ethan Couch, the teenager who fatally struck a disabled motorist and three good Samaritans last summer while driving drunk near Burleson, has settled lawsuits with some of the victims’ families.

The Couch family agreed to pay an undisclosed amount to the families of Breanna Mitchell and Hollie Boyles and her daughter Shelby.

The family of youth pastor Brian Jennings has not reached a settlement with Couch’s family.

Jennings and the Boyleses had pulled over to help Mitchell, who had stopped after a tire blowout late June 15 in the 1500 block of Burleson-Retta Road.

The pickup Couch was driving, which was registered to his father’s company, struck all four pedestrians while traveling 70 mph. The truck flipped, ejecting two teenagers who were sitting in the truck bed and striking several other vehicles.

I’ve not followed this news story at all. What action/comment/event led to the ‘affluenza’ appellation?

That is their way of saying he’s a spoiled rich kid.

Couch’s attorneys argued his parents were responsible for the teen’s actions that night because of the way he had been raised. Defense attorneys put a psychologist on the stand who testified Couch was a product of wealth and got whatever he wanted.

This all started with that "alcoholism is a disease" stuff back in the mid-60s.

Thanks to ObamaCare, what is a disease, and what is the correct federally-funded treatment protocol for new federally-recognized "diseases," is going to get real interesting. All under control of unelected bureaucrats, too!

Defense expert said he was suffering from the effects of too much wealth and leisure ("affluenza") and therefore he was not responsible for his actions.

The judge agreed and made sure he didn't do any time.

I'm glad that one family refused the money.

A truly kind and compassionate victim would help relieve the teen & his family of the cause of his “affluenza” problem....their affluence.

That, and what is defined as "addiction."

Any bad habit, vice, predilection, distraction, etc. that takes up a lot of your time to the detriment of other things you should be doing is now an "addiction." Utter BS.

Too bad.... I hope the families got a huge bankrupting settlement that deprives this little snot nosed brat of any ‘cushion’ in his adult years. This yob killed people and skated because his family is wealthy. Justice was not served in this case

These kinds of judges need to be removed or jailed

I don't know what a lot of people think, but I never thought that alcoholism was a disease.

I don't know what a lot of people think, but I never thought that alcoholism was a disease.

I was only nine or ten years old at the time, and I remember the "public service announcement" ads very well.

Even as a kid, I thought it sounded bogus, but I couldn't lay my finger on exactly why. I couldn't articulate it as I can now, fifty years later.

It sounded like rot to me though, and I had a suspicion that it would lead to problems later.

I had a couple of alcoholic family members (uncles, much older) and I knew darn well that they weren't "sick." They just liked to get good and schnockered.

I expect that other unnamed victims of this punk will be the employees at the roofing/ metal company the family owns.

It’s called addiction to a drug. Alcohol is a choice....just like tobacco, hamburgers and steak. Choice is not a disease.

“This all started with that “alcoholism is a disease” stuff back in the mid-60s.”

I always thought by doing this it relieved the alcoholic of the responsibility for his actions.

It is an addiction that needs to be dealt with on that basis.

Cancer is a disease.

The kid’s an unconscionable ticking time bomb. How long until his next drunken atrocity.

So just what are four lives worth? Whatever this family paid it wasn’t enough. I don’t see them living in a trailer; they didn’t pay so much much that it really hurt.
