Historic Victorian Home Listed At $1 Comes With A Catch

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — You can’t get much for a dollar these days but that’s all you need to buy a Victorian home in Riverside.

The city is trying to pass a 4,800-square-foot home off to someone who will turn it back into a beauty.

So what’s the catch?

The new homeowner has to move the 5-bedroom house or buy the land, according to Emilio Ramirez of Riverside’s community development department. They’d also have to preserve the structure and restore it to its original condition.

“It has a lot of character. It has a lot of history,” Ramirez said.

City leaders bought the blighted property a few years ago in hopes of developing the land and improving the neighborhood.

Attorney Boyd Jensen bought a historic home, also located in downtown Riverside, for approximately $200,000. He says it’s taken a lot of effort to restore the 2,500-square-foot home.

“It would cost over $100,000 to bring it up to where it is now,” Jensen said of the house currently on the market.

Jensen says refurbishing one of these properties requires plenty of cash and lots of love.

“A home like this, a person’s got to care more than just about flipping the home,” the Riverside resident said.

Some estimate the cost to relocate and rehab the Victorian home could run up to $1 million.

City officials say they do have one very interested buyer.

Lots of houses like that in small Kansas towns. I’m guessing that the land isn’t as expensive and no strings attached.

I live a few blocks away, and drive by it everyday. It’s magnificent...I’ve always wished I had the money to buy and restore it. Unfortunately the residences across the street from it are filled with ghetto trash. You would probably be burglarized at least one a month.

4800 sq ft? Comrades! In California this could house the families of 11 illegal aliens.

Ahhh... the rest of the story. The article doesn’t say how much the city paid for it, without doing anything.

There are so many beautiful old homes that have become worthless due to the uh..changes in the neighborhood.

Heartbreaking. Relics of a different time.

If I had more land here, I’d love to have that beauty. Already have half the furnishings.

There is a white elephant hulk of an armory in Duluth that hasn’t been used in 50 years. A private group wanted to tear it down and build something useful (and profitable).

NO NO - HISTORIC (Bob Dylan played there once).

So they sold it for $1 to an arts group that was supposed to rehab it.

The check bounced. There it squats.

I just read an article about the Swope Park Zoo here in Kansas City. They instituted a policy of free access once a week I think, might be once a month, and they of course are having issues with unruly crowds and yesterday, shooting in the parking lot. Sad. I never cared much for that zoo but it was a community resource. I just won’t go to that or to Starlight either anymore because of the crime level. I don’t particularly want to go to the Plaza either except maybe in the middle of the day on a week day when its cold or rainy. Ruining a good city.

Right up this chick's alley. She specializes in throwing good money after bad in Detroit.

and has a voice like nails on a chalkboard. *shudder*

I’m a bad investment (just ask my exes) — maybe she’d like to do some restoration on me.

If things pan out right — then her voice shouldn’t be a problem.

Rehab Addict is Minneapolis, at least in the shows I’ve seen.

A five gallon can of gas and a match will take care of this nicely.
