First Lady Michelle Obama will be accompanied by her children and her mother on her trip to China, which begins today. But she won't be accompanied by the press.
"Michelle Obama’s trip to China starting on Wednesday will be nonpolitical, the White House says, a 'people-to-people exchange' emphasizing the importance that both nations place on education. As if to underscore the point, no reporters are traveling with the first lady, and she does not plan to give interviews while there," reports the New York Times.
The White House is defending the first lady bringing her family along for the ride by saying it's what the Chinese would want. "Tina Tchen, Mrs. Obama’s chief of staff and a first-generation Chinese-American, said a multigenerational visit would be appreciated by the Chinese, who value tradition," says the Times.

Well said. Her desire for privacy makes you wonder what her problem is after all these years of chasing the limelight. This woman is not a shy little flower. What’s the problem? Does she think reporters will talk bad about her behind her back? Well, suppose they do — what is she, some sort of sacrosanct royal?

Which is why any photo-journalist worth their salt will lie, bribe and cajole their way into getting the pictures that will be worth 1000 words of this trip. Where’s the paparazzi when you need them? Nutless little dorks used to being spoonfed everything— and that includes the conservative media also.
Put a bounty on the most embarrassing photo, as selected by website visitors, and run with it. Make fun of her. Ridicule and the exposition of hypocrisy beats angry tirades every time. Ask Putin, he’s done it to Obama all week long.
How many businesses could make payroll?
I'll take a guess that, with security, entourage, etc etc that the trip will cost in the millions. Or, far, far more than Mrs WBill and I (and most other couples) will ever accrue in a lifetime of saving for retirement.
For a junket, for her and the kids. Meanwhile, (and coincidentally) I'm wrestling with taking a vacation this summer. We really shouldn't, we can't afford it, but there's a big family get-together happening and I think it would be good for the kids (and the wife and me).
Easier not to dwell on such ironies, it just gets my BP up.
