In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sciolism (SY-uh-liz-uhm) noun
Pretentious display of superficial knowledge..
Example sentence:
"This consists of some of the dullest sciolism in the history of prose, a standardized academic jargon and rhetoric, the dutiful rehearsal of received theory, and the deliberate misrepresentation of anything challenging or rejecting academic postmodernism."
--Michael Donaghy; The Shape of the Dance; Picador; 2009.
Etymology:
From Late Latin sciolus (smatterer), diminutive of Latin scius (knowing), from scire (to know). Ultimately from the Indo-European root skei- (to cut or split), which also gave us schism, ski, shin, science, conscience, nice, scienter, nescient, exscind, and adscititious. Earliest documented use: 1810.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Rise and shine!
Sciolism?
I think I have some of that on my elbow.
Morning!
When everything is an -ism
And one has a limited prism
You can run over to Google
For the works of Plato or a flugle,
What sort of intellectual nihilism
Results in such constant sciolism?
Pretentious? Moi?
Well done! A+ for you!
My thoughts ran in exactly that direction earlier; so you might want to get yourself checked.
i think the cat is the antichrist ; )
Try not to tell me what happened in the Pitt game this afternoon, please. I’m recording it. I figure it should be their last decent game.
i haven’t spoiled any games for you, have i? it wasn’t intentional if i did, but i don’t recall. Obama violated fed law by filling out that bracket, bc we are briefed every March about how it’s illegal to gamble at work...
I don’t think you have, certainly not on purpose.
my nephew is at Baylor and he and his friends are going to San Antone for those two games. He transferred to Baylor from Mount Union in Ohio, as a sophomore and he has been loving the big time sports programs at Baylor. He is 6’5” tall, and so he makes it into quite a few of their photos of the student section, it’s hilarious, i wouldn’t be surprised if he is in video montages!
