Interesting - it seems like after Messina, the non-eastern European battle was in a kind of abeyance. Maybe the Allies (other than Russia) didn’t have anywhere to go until the invasion on the western front. Did the Alps in Italy present too big a problem to advance in large enough force? I wonder why the effort to take Sicily if things were to stall in Italy.
