I get this now. just happened after downloading Hitman Pro after my free trial expired and then attempting reboot.

Not sure if this is related to that. When I try CTRL+ALT+DEL , I just get the same message.

so how do I reboot?(no, I no longer have the boot disk or program CD)

Toshiba Satellite L505-S6946 and Vista Home Premium...

I feel ya bro. I spent 4 hours yesterday working on my youngest daughter’s Dell Inspiron...and, I had the boot disk. I was ready to take it to the shop when, after probably 25-30 restarts, it finally accepted the disc. After the diagnosis/repair function kicked in, it did a check disc and fixed it. Whew.

Going out to look for a backup drive this weekend...and considering a new laptop for the kid.

Good luck.

pressing f8 or rapidly tapping f8( to try to do “method 4” doesn’t work.)

I have a 2104 AVG rescue disk . I wonder if that would work(if I could ever get to the screen to be able to use it)

Reboot in safe mode then select an earlier backup.

Hi.

Reboot in safe mode then select an earlier backup.

We got hit yesterday. Somehow Norton got turned off.

We rebooted in safe mode, took the previous days system restore, and it worked...one other thing, rerun Norton, quite a few updates. Finally killed the thing. Oh, and reset all of your passwords.

Hit F8 when system is restarting and do a restore from an earlier restore point. You’ll lose the program but no files you’ve created or changed.

Does the F2 and F12 function show up at the top of the screen as the cpu attempts to boot up?

At least, those are the 2 F functions I was offered as I attempted to boot up. F2 for Setup, F12 for Boot Menu. In the top right of screen, but only there for a few seconds.

If you don't have the boot loader on your hard drive, you've gotta boot from another source.

Windows Vista Official Setup Files (Digital River)

This is an ISO (or image) file that can be burned as a DVD install disk. Choose "repair" when you boot with it.

I would see if one of the choices after you get to that screen is to check the boot order of bootable devices.

Usually, you boot from a hard drive /C and then a disc drive /D or a usb drive. See if /c is the first boot drive.

He tried f8,

I think he can’t even get to the bootable section of his bios to get to his hard drive bootable section.
