Time for a New Laptop
03.28.14 | chickensoup

Posted on 03/28/2014 2:03:22 PM PDT by Chickensoup

Time for a new laptop. The Sony Vaio is getting tired. Am looking for a reasonably priced laptop with some power to it. It is a desktop replacement so it cannot be one of those sissy teenyweenies.

Currently have a 4gb ram, 2.20ghrtz 64 bit system running my beloved Windows 7 with word and outlook 2003.

Looking for something as big, perhaps a little lighter and certainly faster, that has a disc drive, and ports for my trackball.

I refuse to consider Dell.

Yes I know, Applehead, they are wonderful but no thanks.

Any recommendations?

I just bought an Alienware 17 - super fast.

Good for 3d modeling and gaming

Take a good look at Toshiba, I have two at home, the new 19” is really a nice package. Don’t like W8, but you’re kind of screwed there now. Bought it at Office Depot on sale, don’t remember the exact price but I’m really happy with it, and I do some serious CAD/CAM work too.

I will also be looking for a new laptop later this year. For the past several years, I have only bought Dell, not necessarily because they make the best laptops, but because they are the only vendor who offers an on-site 24-hour service guarantee.

Dell’s on-site service has always been superb. Maybe some other manufacturer has a product that needs service less frequently (although I doubt it), but I’d rather have reliable service.

I don’t trust Geek Squad, and I don’t want to have to send or bring in my laptop and leave it anywhere for servicing.

I never hear anybody talk about on-site service probably the single most important laptop feature, but I would be interested in the opinions of my fellow Freepers about this.

Asus. They are well-priced. You can get anything from a low-end email machine to a “Republic of Gamers” laptop that will rival almost any desktop.

They are all well-built, from quality components, and I’ve had 4 and none have ever had a problem. I buy the RoG monsters and my wife uses smaller, slimmer ones.

For Windows 8, install classic shell or Start8 to get the windows 7 look and feel back. I like windows 8 as much as 7 with this one little change. The upcoming windows 8 update may be even better but I haven’t seen the features in it yet.

Agreed! Asus makes a fine laptop. Pretty much one for every need and budget.

Own two, one's three years old, the other is about 8 months old. Neither's ever had an issue. Best thing: Asus didn't load 'em up with a bunch of crapware that I had to remove.

I have this $250 Asus I got, uh, last year sometime at Best Buy; the same model remains available in the local BB stores, but bundled with a printer pushing the price up. It came with 8.0 installed, and I “upgraded” to 8.1. I prefer to use it hooked to the TV, with a wireless keyboard and mouse, because of the abominable scratchpad thing that is in lieu of mouse (wtf those don’t come with an off switch, I’d really like to know). This isn’t a netbook style, it’s a normal sized screen. I’ll FReepmail you more details if you want.

“I wouldn’t consider an HP............”

Me either. My spouse’s HP refused to start-up, so she called their customer service this morning. (It’s 3 months old.)
HP pretty much told her, “Too bad, so sad.”
I finally got it to start by taking out the battery and pressing the start button while inserting the power cord.

Minor correction:

Alienware is over-priced Dell with cool LEDs and hipster-approved cases.

Alienware computers are NOT what they used to be. Used to be you paid a premium for one of their computers because they were built like tanks from the processor up, were faster than anything else you could buy off the shelf and were reliable.

Not anymore.

Yes. I’ve had 4 of their laptops and I’ve used their motherboards in desktops for many years. I only replace them because I’m a techie and need more, faster, bigger, etc. I sell them to friends when I upgrade and they’re all still running.

Steer clear of anything with the names Lenovo, HP, Dell, Gateway and MSI on them. I cannot tell you how many of these I've fixed (physical repairs, HDD's and undoing crapware installed on them for friends and family.) If you gave me one of these I'd just pitch it in the garbage for all they're worth. Crappy build quality.

Do yourself a MASSIVE favor and don’t get one that has Winblows 8.1 installed.

If so, at least get one with “downgrade”(their words) rights for Windows 7 professional, and make sure the installation media is included!

Also make SURE it has 64bit hardware. No point in getting anything with 32bit hardware anymore, unless you have a ‘legacy’ application that some how depends on it.

If you have no alternative with the installed OS being Win 8.1, find another laptop all together, opt for NO pre-installed OS - insisting on a discount, and install Linux on it. You’ll thank yourself many times later. I expect Microsoft to throw Win 8 from the train faster than they did Vista. It indeed sucks THAT bad.(don’t let anyone tell you otherwise)

My wife is extremely happy with her Toshiba laptop, my sons with their Acers.

My advice: get a Mac and don’t look back. Not intended as a platform flame. My IIgs from 1985 or so still boots, as does every other Apple product I’ve purchased since. You can run your beloved Windows 7 in Bootcamp or inside Parallels Desktop.

I’m on a Toshiba laptop now, but have a (like an ARVN M-16: fairly new, barely used) HP desktop—Pavilion w/ Windows 7, one of the last at the time—and I can’t get the !&$! thing to copy files from a 1Omega portable hard drive.
Nothing but grief so far with HP. I used to love their business printers, but never again.
