We pretend to work, and they pretend to pay us.

Rather, the taxes are so high to finance the welfare state and "liberating" licentiousness, including treating HIV, and which effects rent and food prices, that both employers and employees have a hard time. If the minimum wage goes up then all others must and it will be worse.

In addition, the pay is usually not enough to maintain a standard of living our grandparents and most people in the world would dream of. Even way back in 2004,

Of the 35 million living in American poverty, 43% live in their own homes, with only 6% of poor households being overcrowded; two-thirds have more than two rooms per person. The typical poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens and other cities throughout Europe. 83% have air conditioning, 97% own a color TV, 78% a DVD or VCR, 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception. 65% their own washing machine, 73% their own car, 30% own more than one car. "How Poor Are America's Poor? Examining the 'Plague' of Poverty in America" (8/27/2007), from several government sources, (http://townhall.com/columnists/walterewilliams/2010/06/30/where_best_to_be_poor) and “Understanding Poverty in America”, by Robert E. Rector and Kirk A. Johnson, Ph.D., 2004, http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/BG1713es.cfm. and U.S. Census Bureau; Executive Summary #1713:

I think the big reason why people don’t care is because for many they are locked into their jobs. They cannot advance, so why try. It used to be that you could take the lowest job in the company and, through hard work, have the opportunity to advance. That’s largely not the case any more.

Ahh... so capitalism is to blame.

t's not the only factor, but I am convinced it is a major contributor, and too little discussed. At a minimum, we should have mandatory drug testing for people applying for welfare benefits.

That is antithetical to the liberal ethos, in which drug addicts are victimized so they liberals can claim a moral superiority in helping (subsidizing) them (at the cost of others while they remain in the rarefied atmosphere of a Starbucks culture), in order to foster their own all-wise elitism as part of an ever increasing scope and intrusiveness of government, (perhaps staffed much by liberal students to get their student loans forgiven);

so they can dictate what all should do. That of the devil's will being done in earth as it is in his realm. As he was the first to engage in an "occupy movement" and "share the wealth" campaign, (Is. 14; Gn. 3) climbing up some other way than merit and in grace.

See results .

t is a fact that the quality of the labor pool is pretty bad... The most significant qualification a potential employee has now is showing up every day on time. ...the level of education I see would have embarrassed an 8th grader in the 60s. At least me when I was in the 8th grade.

Speaking of 8th grade, way back in 1992 (which souls are now the working and non-working class) the National Adult Literacy Survey tests show that only about 56% of the blacks and 83% of the whites over sixteen are literate. [55] Scores on 1994 NAEP reading tests indicate that 42% of the 4th graders can't read; 72% of the 8th graders can't read 8th grade assignments; and 66% of the nation's high school seniors can't read 9th grade textbooks in any core subject. USDE. 1994. NAEP Reading: A First Look. p. 18.

A 2009 survey of almost 30,000 high school students nationwide found that 30% admitted to stealing from a store within the past year (19 percent who attend religious schools). 23% said they stole from a parent or relative. More than 83% stated they lied to a parent about something significant. 42 confessed that they sometimes lied to save money (up from 395 in 2006). 64 percent had cheated on a test in the past year (up from 60 percent two years earlier) and 38 percent had cheated more than once. More than 36% had used the Internet to plagiarize. 26% also confessed to lying on at least one survey question. However, 93% agreed, "I am satisfied with my own ethics and character," and 77% affirmed , "When it comes to doing what is right, I am better than most people I know." Josephson Institute http://charactercounts.org/programs/reportcard/

More .

And in contrast .

Thanks for that citation, it will no doubt prove a valuable resource.

The reference in it to Engle vs. Vitale takes me back to college days when I had to write a paper on the subject. That was in my inchoate pre-ACLU days when Justice Hugo Black was a hero. I excuse the waywardness of my youth pertaining to the subject of church and state to a pesky libertarian streak which has to some degree been thankfully mugged by reality.

Not sure why the Asian part is relevant—I thought that was long the rather low standard of many letter carriers.

I have the same problem with my mailman. I’ve complained several times, even going down to the post office and asking if someone could train him to look at the addresses before putting the letters in the mail boxes.

Nothing will be done because he is a protected minority, and he thinks it’s hysterical when you hand him the neighbor’s mail.

The reference in it to Engle vs. Vitale takes me back to college days when I had to write a paper on the subject.

And goes back further.

In a letter to Samuel Miller, Jefferson also wrote, "Certainly, no power to prescribe any religious exercise, or to assume authority in religious discipline, has been delegated to the General Government. It must then rest with the States, as far is it can be in any human authority."[21][22]

In 1998, the FBI’s crime lab examined Jefferson's letter, uncovering words deleted by the president (nearly 30 percent of the draft) prior to publication. This, along with other evidence, indicates that Jefferson’s pledge to separate church and state was at least partly political motivated.

James H. Hutson, head of the library’s manuscripts collection, stated, "It will be of considerable interest in assessing the credibility of the Danbury Baptist letter as a tool of constitutional interpretation to know, as we now do, that it was written as a partisan counterpunch, aimed by Jefferson below the belt of enemies who were tormenting him more than a decade after the First Amendment was composed."[23]

Jefferson’s letter and the FBI’s restoration work are among the items in an exhibit at the Library of Congress called, "Religion and the Founding of the American Republic." The exhibit also notes that Jefferson began to attend worship services held at the House of Representatives two days after writing the letter, and that he permitted regular worship services to be held there, a practice that continued until after the Civil War, with preachers from every Protestant denomination appearing there.http://www.conservapedia.com/Separation_of_church_and_state

Because he's an affirmative action hire. Nothing will ever be done about his complete and utter incompetence and his horrendous attitude. And he's well aware of it.

“Political undesirables” probably in that list as well.

Where in the world did I say capitalism was to blame?

People respond to incentives. People’s motivations tends to be reduced when the incentives, from the person’s POV, is considered inadequate.

It’s human nature.

The big problem is no accountability. Supervisors don’t know how or are afraid to supervise.

How affirmative does hiring have to be to win a spot over your average white postal worker?

I don’t see where your affirmative action assumptions fit the circumstances. (And yeah, my experience has been that Asian postal workers, on average, are the most driven and efficient.)

Ideological dissidents by another word. I was just reading about John Locke, http://www.fee.org/the_freeman/detail/john-locke-natural-rights-to-life-liberty-and-property, and how men were executed for writing articles akin to those often posted here as politically incorrect.

So they need supervisors who need supervisors. When i worked at a family run dairy we overall operated with little oversight, though only the 2 bosses were family. Thus we were more competitive with better quality than price. (But ice cream melts and souls live forever).

They hired a couple new ones who is turned out were doing a side business. Mngt suspected it due to shrinkage #'s and the old man caught them. But trust is precious and one thief hurts that.

Some still take pride in their work, but in some cases,it is getting difficult to do this. Case in point: the place where I worked paid lip service to the employees, but did little to make it possible to earn a decent wage. I was well past retirement age,so finally decided enough was enough. My wages(not counting Soc.Sec.)would not pay the bills & this was in a skilled trade.

Children’s tv and books are all about cooperation, and little or nothing about the triumph of the individual.

I remember in particular, this piece of garbage my kids were forced to read...
