Hearing-impaired Californians signing up for health insurance sent to 'hot ladies' hotline

Some hearing-impaired California residents attempting to sign up for health insurance through the Covered California website prior to Monday’s deadline got a surprise -- and it wasn’t just long wait times.

A page on the site allowing users to compare coverage costs listed a TTY phone number for the hearing-impaired, 1-888-899-4500, which was just one digit off from the correct “Contact Us” number.

The incorrect number is for a hotline that offers up “hot ladies” instead of health insurance. “Welcome to America’s hottest talk line. Ladies, to talk to interesting and exciting guys free, press one now. Guys, hot ladies are waiting to talk to you. Press two to connect free now,” a recording says.

When Covered California was contacted about the mix-up, a spokesperson denied there had been a mistake. “We’ve never had the incorrect number on our site,” the spokesperson wrote to CBS Sacramento.

Another email was soon to follow.

“…After investigating it further, we are reviewing the shop and compare tool as an incorrect number. We’re currently working to correct the problem,” read the second email.

The mistake is now fixed on the Covered California website.

“I guess it’s an honest mistake but websites aren’t that hard to keep up right,” said Jeff Brown, a man who called the wrong number.

Still probably a better product for their money.

Something like this happened to my 90+ mom when she was trying to order her prescriptions from AARP. She got a funny look on her face and handed me the phone in time for me to hear “And for just $3.99 a minute I can .....”it was just a one digit mistake

She had me do the medication orders from than on.

Not particularly fair that only the hearing impaired get a better experience than those who have to deal with healthcare.gov.

Well, at least by calling this line, they can fantasize about getting screwed in a good way, instead of calling the other line and getting actually screwed in a bad way.
