Who are the REAL kings (and queens) of cool? National Portrait Gallery runs exhibition of the 100 coolest Americans, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Debbie Harry

Years after they first made their mark Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra, Madonna and Blondie are all still hip enough to have earned a place in the top 100 coolest Americans.

The 'American Cool' exhibit is currently on show at the National Portrait Gallery, in Washington, D.C. America, until 7 September.

Included in the exhibit are the likes of jazz musicians such as Miles Davis and Billie Holiday, actors such as Johnny Depp, and singers such as Elvis Presley and Debbie Harry.

The term 'cool' originated in the United States in the early 1940s when legendary jazz saxophonist Lester Young brought the central African American concept into the modern vernacular.

Besides his talents in jazz, Calloway was more adept at the use of slang than anyone else I can think of. And his delivery was nothing, if not, “cool.”

You fellah, you tearin’ up the street
You wear that white tuxedo
How you gonna beat the heat
Do you take me for a fool
Do you think that I don’t see
That ditch out in the valley
That they’re digging just for me

“Walk Between the Raindrops” is the best song Fagen ever did, you can just imagine yourself in 50s-era Miami Beach just hearing it.

Probably shouldn’t say this, but that album ‘The Nightfly’ was playing the first time I had sex.

John Lennon and Mick Jagger didn’t make the list, and they think that’s cool?

Live version of “Pretzel Logic” with Drew Zingg on lead was their absolute best! Drew is easily the best lead they ever employed...

Define cool and then make the list.

Amazing musicians who seem to be blessed with a natural affinity? People with an infectious charisma who entertain and charm with such joy?

Or, as is often the definition of cool, people who are so hardened inside that they literally do not care - about other’s opinions of them, about social norms, etc. - as much as others? Caring less does often equal cool. And it’s not necessarily a good thing. The Fonzie character at first was this kind of cool. No skills, no talent or charisma. Just hard enough not to care, which weaker people sometimes gravitate towards.

To me, being cool means:

1. Being comfortable in your own skin.
2. Excelling at something without seeming to try too hard; naturalness.
3. Unpretentiousness.
4. Wit, including self-deprecating wit.
5. Understated intelligence; intelligence that doesn't try to show off.

I can hear that kid’s mother perfectly:

You’re going to be on television. Of course you have to wear a tie.
