Update: Police say they've busted the Macbook thief. Read our story here.
A blog post ago we told you about some ballsy people who were tipping over Smart Cars in various San Francisco neighborhoods. So while we were on the subject of brazen fools, we decided to show you some surveillance of a latte-drinking thief who reportedly stole a computer from a downtown coffee shop.
A local iOS developer is on the hunt for her Macbook which was snatched from the cafe while the victim was in the restroom. The only good part to this is that the victim was able to retrieve the surveillance of the entire theft which has since been posted to YouTube.
Watch:
The victim has created her own tumblr page dedicated to getting her technology back.
Here's a post:
UPDATE: If you have any more information about the girl in black and white, please reach out to the San Francisco Police Department at (415) 315-2400. Case Number: 140281005
I am a freelance iOS developer. I live and work in San Francisco. A total tragedy happened to me yesterday. My virtual limbs (aka MacBook Air and iPhone) were stolen at a local coffee shop on Post st. and Taylor st. in SF Downtown area. Months worth of creative work I stored on my device will be lost forever, if I can't catch this girl and get my computer back. Click here for new New Updates
PLEASE SHARE THIS POST AND HELP GET MY COMPUTER BACK!

Time of Crime: April 4, 4:35pm (The time in surveillance camera is 12 hours off)
At 3:20pm, This blonde thief comes into the coffee shop and eyes my computer.
Officer Gordon Shyy confirmed that a police report was filed regarding this incident.
Yes. Get computrace. Dell offers it and it works. I got two of three laptops back with charges pressed.
For an IT pro, this woman is an idiot. Doesn’t back up her data, leaves her critical devices in the open, typical oblivious mac user.
That’s one thing you can usually spot about trannies. They don’t have a woman’s taste in hair, clothes, makeup, etc. They usually have a twisted caricature of a woman’s taste, very exaggerated and outsized.
Don’t you know, owning Apple hardware is as much a social statement as a technology choice? Social statements are useless if nobody sees them, so they have to drag these things around in public. Otherwise, how would their fellow hip, socially conscious techies recognize them?
A liberal
i condemn theft and thieves of every kind.
that said, i also do not leave anything of any value unattended in a public place full of strangers i do not know.

Unless it is booby-trapped.
“Nothing so vexes me as a thief aboveground.” - O. Porter
yes, that is a good exception, but it wouldn’ t be anything of value to me if that was the case.
Someone told me there is software that will maliciously overclock your CPU to fry it.
Yep. Note to self. Don't bring my Lap top to a coffee shop, and if I violate that rule, don't leave it unattended.
That’s Frankie Baldwin, one of the few Laz-proof hominids in existence.
Not all Booby Traps go BOOM.

It shouldn’t be difficult to enable a GPS subsystem in the lappy at all times to broadcast its geolocation to the user’s cell phone. Perhaps have a separate install kit for a lappy that is longterm operational and powered separate from the system battery to broadcast its geolocation on command. That way the thief never knows if the lappy has this system and removal of the battery pack will not defeat the tracking.
San Francisco is a HOT BED of thievery of i products — thieves take advantage of the causal atmosphere there, and in Berkeley too. That’s what the cops told us Berkeley parents at a meeting, said there were also cameras everywhere there, in SF too.
When my daughter attended Berkeley, we were warned that thefts of computers were rampant by criminals coming over from Oakland, driving slowly down the streets while the guy in the passenger seat grabbed students’ backpacks or computer bags from unwary students and then screeched off.
My daughter said kids would leave their expensive Mac Pros in the library unguarded while they went to the bathroom, got something to eat, went outside to make phone calls, etc. Some people have to learn the hard way, I guess.
My daughter had her iPhone stolen while she was sitting on a bench in SF talking with a friend, the phone was in her lap at the time. She said she looked down and saw a hand in her lap coming around from behind and the next thing she knew the thief had her phone and was running off. She ran off after him screaming - and said NO ONE helped and NO ONE stopped the thief. Luckily, she had insurance and was able to cancel the phone plan on the spot via a friend’s phone. She said she never dreamed someone would steal her phone in such a manner.
One can never be too careful.
Opportunity knocks! Mr./Ms. TechSavvy should invent an alarm to attach to your device. You're plugged in and don't want to take it with you to the toilet or wherever; set the alarm. When you return, turn off the alarm by password or fingerprint recognition.
Sorry. A person who would leave a Mac Book sitting in the open unattended while visiting the restroom deserves to lose it.
Stupidity should be painful.
"Ok. Ok. I tell you evryting."
They simply MUST be seeeeen.
"Look at how nonchalantly COOL I am. I got the Mac Book working while slurping coffee. How amazing am I?"
