I was at Clark air base in the mid 70’s. The guys from Diego Garcia couldn’t believe it’ “They got women here!!”

Yeah, what a crock. Guess I’ll have to settle on GTMO for vacation this year.

Ah, the balmy breeze...
The white sands and black coral...
The blue lagoon and Hector the hammerhead - and all his little offspring...

The 24-hour alerts... hauling sonobouys from one end of the island to the other... rebuilding your APS-80 radar display in an un-airconditioned space because the unit is broken and they can't get parts...
Waiting for the next squadron bird to come in with a bomb bay full of cases of San Miguel...

What's not to love about Dodge?

Who? Divers who like odd locations. Difficult but doable.
Military who have friends or relatives stationed there and want to see them.

I spent a week or two on DG about thirty years ago in transit from Gonzo Station. It was like Gilligan’s Island, only with lots of noisy jets and no Mary Ann or Ginger. I actually enjoyed my time there after spending interminable months on the USS Independence. They made you eggs to order in the galley and the good didn’t all taste like jet fuel. Freekin’ luxury. But I can’t see why anybody would go there on leave with all the other alternatives.

My suspicion is that the Diego Garcia is simply a transit hub for those on ships stationed in the Indian Ocean. The end destination is probably not Diego Garcia per se.

Well...some of us did not have a choice...

Something must be driving this effort of mis-information...

It is not as easy to hide things these days there...not like it was back in 1985...

Average low is 82 degrees

Average high is 86 degrees.

Temperature has never been recorded below 77 degrees!

Forget about wanting to take leave there, I want to live there! I'll spend the rest of my days sitting on the beach eating coconuts and sipping umbrella drinks.

I heard that leave travel to Minot AFB has also been banned. I bet there will be a lot of disappointed servicemen after hearing that news too.
