PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Once again, Portland officials are preparing to flush millions of gallons of treated water because a young person urinated into a city reservoir.

Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff said 38 million gallons will be discarded because a 19-year-old was caught in the act on Wednesday

The open reservoirs hold water that's already been treated and goes directly into mains for distribution to customers.

Good thing there are no birds or other wild critters around there./s

I wonder how much algae is in that reservoir? I’d be more concerned about the poisons produced by that.

Still it is a really silly move to keep treated water in an open lake.

It's really good that no critter with mange or something hasn't died in that water.

My family built water treatment plants when I was growing up. I have horror stories.

There is a reason that chlorine is one the of the last things added before the water leaves the plant.

preparing to flush millions of gallons of treated water

Now wait a minute... they treat it first and then store it in an open reservoir?

Are these people just stupid? Have they never heard of wild animals and all manner of winds blowing crap into their drinking water?

Seriously, birds poop and pee in that thing.

Aren't they so smart they're stupid ?

Animals crap and then die and decay. Water flows downhill to larger and larger bodies of water.

The earth is an amazing purification system.

But that's "wacky science" for "crazy Bible/gun clingers".

We should be bowing to the Monsanto-Rockefeller sterile, green world edicts.

You would think that Portland would have some sort of treatment plant operation before it went directly into the glass form the water faucet... Maybe they should do a quick internet search to find out what they do..

From their website:

Treatment & Testing Portland’s Water

The Portland Water Bureau treats Portland’s water with chloramination. This process starts with chlorine to disinfect the water. Next the city adds ammonia to ensure that disinfection remains adequate throughout our distribution system.

The Portland Water Bureau also adds sodium hydroxide to increase the pH of the water to reduce corrosion of plumbing systems. This treatment helps control lead and copper levels at customers’ taps should these metals be present in the customers’ home plumbing.

Portland’s water is currently not filtered. The Bull Run source meets the filtration avoidance criteria of the 1989 Surface Water Treatment Rule and has had a waiver from the requirement to filter since 1991.

Sadly, that myFoxNY article SUCKS.

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/04/portland_will_flush_38_million.html#incart_m-rpt-1

“Police have not released the names of those cited and have not decided whether to charge anyone with additional crimes. “

I guess being on video and taking selfies and caught on scene isn’t enough evidence for Moscow on the Willamette to make a decision on charging anyone after a $35,000 hit to the city and its tax/ratepayers...

FWIW

According to the article they have five open reserviors for holding the treated water. They
are in the process of building underground/closed storage to comply with the Federal Regs.

Equal to one (0.05mL) drop in 8000 gallons. You probably get a lot more from spray from a flushing toilet hitting a glass by your sink. (and I bet you close the lid next time before flushing just from thinking about that)

This must be the most incompetent group of "professionals" in charge of that water system. They are unaware that the water of the space station recycles 100% of all their water (no details should be necessary)?

They are planning to waste, literally,a month's supply of water for a medium sized city.
And here I thought there was a drought problem in the Western U.S.
