If the budget would be balanced by selling off the huge swaths of Federal land -- why not do it?

Give it back to the rightful owners. The states or the local counties.
But if you insist. Average the price per acre and times it by the amount of federal land.
But, if it were given back to the local counties, the control and taxes would go directly into the local county coffers.

The feds didn’t pay the states for it to begin with. The feds shouldd pay back rent to the states and give it back
Camp Pendleton alone might pay off the national debt. Just imagine 200 square miles with 17 miles of pristine Pacific beachfront in crowded Southern California. That is some valuable real estate!

Camp Pendleton is a military base. At least the last time I knew.
The price per acre is going to vary enormously depending on where the land is and what it can be used for.
As for it belonging to the each state, that may very too depending on if the land was acquired before the state became a state. Obviously, land which was Federalized while the locale was still a territory, isn’t going to be sovereign land of the state.
Nope, when the territory became a state, the land goes to them.
You do know that all each state has to do, is claim these lands do you not?
Nevada for instance would become very rich, very fast. That is, if they would play their cards right.
A lot of that land is rich in minerals and oil.
Barry would sell them to Putin and the ChiComs.
How about a simple amendment to the Constitution, requiring that the percentage of land owned by the Federal government in any state falls within 2% of a national average?
