Johnny Depp’s “Transcendence” bombed last night as expected, taking in just $4.8 million. That means the $150 million movie will likely take in around $12 million for the weekend.

This is Depp’s second major flop at the box office, following the catastrophic “Lone Ranger.” And now this poses an important question: can Depp open a movie that isn’t “Pirates of the Caribbean”? The answer is No. He’s made zillions from the Disney adventure movies.

That's a bit harsh. He may have gotten himself typecast by the pirate movies, but previously he has done a lot of good films and roles.

This got bad reviews, but I won't pin it on Depp. At least he is moving away from the pirate roles now, and the quirky Tim Burton style roles and doing something different.

I saw that trailer for this one. Interesting subject matter, but I guess you can only do Lawnmower Man so many times.

Depp was one of my favorite actors in the 80s and 90s. His work in stuff like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, Benny and Joon, Ed Wood, etc. was superb. He’s still a very talented actor, but I think his super-stardom from those silly Pirates movies has been a two-edged sword.

I also never thought I’d say this, but maybe it’s time for Depp and Burton to part ways. Sweeney Todd was pretty good, but most of the stuff they’ve done together in the last decade or so has been a disappointment - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, especially.

Depp is rich enough that he can do whatever movies he feels like.

For now, anyway.

Maybe he was just intrigued by the role/story.

Like Battlefield Earth, Travolta has enough cash that he could make his "dream project".

Didn't work out so hot.

In fact, Travolta has kind of fallen off the radar again.

If Depp continues making high budget stinkers, he won't KEEP his riches, though.

This is Depp’s second major flop at the box office, following the catastrophic “Lone Ranger.”

Apparently "Dark Shadows" didn't have a budget big enough for it to also be considered a "major" flop.

FWIW, if you liked the trailer but the reviews have put you off, may I recommend "Colossus: The Forbin Project". It's from 1970 so it might be hard to find on Netflix, amazon, etc. But I myself put it in the same group as Soylent Green, Rollover, and Silent Running, to name a few, as one that will really shock you with a grim ending.

I watched the preview before the Captain America feature. I was not impressed, and so I’m not surprised by the flop. Although, Depp’s a very good actor.

It may have something to do with the films “message”. I believe Pinkerton nailed it down well. Read here:

He sure can. He’s done some good work. One of my favorites is Nick of Time. Very 24esque-type thriller. I heard Travolta say that it takes more time to keep current on his pilot ratings than making movies.

Loved Colossus: The Forbin Project. Used to be on Youtube, but can’t find it now.

Well, so what! He will have successes and failures but the overall product is that he is a liberal idiot! Will I watch his films, maybe if they are really good but those films that are on the boundary, no...he can take the loss.

I actually liked the Lone Ranger film - I thought it was a great comedy but when reading about it, it made no mention of it being a comedy...what’s up with that?

Battlefield Earth would have been better as a 8-10 hour miniseries.

That is a LOT of pages to try to squeeze in to single movie, and they left out a lot of the character development.

Oh, pshaw! Doesn’t the final verdict on the Depp oeuvre really belong to the French who are so much more civilized and sophisticated than are we Americans?

This article has more than one inaccuracy. “Finding Neverland” was a box office disappointment, although it got good reviews.
