Wow. I can recall a vast number of shows from that era, but this one does not ring a bell. If it was an evening show it must of been opposite of something my dad wanted to watch.
Kenneth Tobey also played Deputy Ken Tobey in the movie “Billy Jack”! 8)
I don’t remember Festus in whirlybirds, certainly not the partner. I it was that red headed guy. The chain smoker that ran the gas station in Gremlins.
I wish “Whirlybirds” was available on dvd, but it’s not (officially). I have a few episodes on an old bootleg videotape. I think it was a Desilu production, so it’s probably part of the Paramount library nowadays.
“Ripcord,” a Ziv series, came out on dvd last year. There was also an aviation-oriented anthology series around the same time, titled “Flight,” produced by the same outfit that made the sub series “Silent Service.”
“Whirlybirds” was a made-for-syndication series, like “Highway Patrol” and “Sea Hunt,” thus different markets/localities ran it on different days and times. But, it was nonetheless a particularly popular syndicated series, and circulated rather widely.
Now those two I remember. Crawford and Bridges.
My library just got a set of Sea Hunt DVD’s . . .
and though I vaguely remember whirlybirds, I can’t recollect it (also losing my memory at the age of 60).

Ah, Sea Hunt! I used to watch Sea Hunt all the time. So much so, that my Dad became so annoyed by the constant sound of bubbles from the SCUBA gear he would go out and sit in the yard whenever the show was on. My favorite episode was when Mike Nelson stepped on a giant clam which quickly closed around his leg and trapped him. This all seemed perfectly reasonable to me, and even likely. Mike's solution, which seemed equally reasonable, if not obvious, was to ignite an underwater flair and stick it into the clam's shell, causing the poor burnt clam to release him. I saw that episode many times.
I’m sure I’ll be reacquainted with that episode . . . then I’ll remember you mentioned it.
