When I updated to 6, I lost the ability to turn the wi-fi on and off. Completely greyed out in settings. Would love to have that back. If there’s a way to upgrade to 7 and get around the problem I have, I’m all ears. Have there been any issues reported with 7 yet?

That was a known issue with a few iPhones. Sync your data to your computer, restore the iPhone to factory, restore the iOS, do any updates, and then re-sync to restore all your apps, photos, music, etc. That should fix the WIFI problem.
