Love it or Hate it: Where Do You Come Down on Kale, Beets, Okra, Brussels Sprouts and Cilantro?

Cilantro was described as an aphrodisiac in the Arabian Nights, but that fact fails to impress those who hate it with a passion.

Cilantro was described as an aphrodisiac in "The Arabian Nights," but that fact fails to impress those who hate it with a passion.

Julia Child famously told Larry King that it has a "dead taste," and she would pick it out of a dish "and throw it on the floor." The pro-cilantro crowd is just as vocal, if not as descriptive. You can find the debate anywhere you find cilantro and the people who meticulously pick it out of their food.

We explore the adoration and hatred of this herb, and some other divisive foods, in our latest edition of Love It, Hate It. To get started, we asked staff writers Joan Morris and Martha Ross to square off on cilantro.

"Cilantro blows. Any dish you make with it is better off without it . . . not that I have a strong opinion, or anything."

One of my favorite super quick lunches:

1 can albacore
light dusting of sea salt
generous dusting of cilantro
splash of Tabasco

“Who in the world STIRS bacon? “

You never went camping with my dad. He would throw about 3 lbs of bacon in a skillet and stir occasionally until it suited him remove the bacon and fry the eggs in 2 inches of grease. Presto, breakfast was served. I miss those camping trips.

Never had kale, but I saw a recipe recently for baked kale I’d like to try one day.

I’ll pass on the beets and brussels sprouts but love okra, either fried or in soup.

I don’t recall cilantro tasting bad. Then again, I’ve never asked for extra, as a friend of mine always does, so I suppose I can take it or leave it.

I don’t care fro Broccoli by itself but it is OK cooked with cheese. I have noticed that after eating Broccoli my urine will have a distinctive odor for a couple of hours.

I love cilantro and spinach and avocado! lol

I cook with cilantro every chance I get. It is inexpensive and just enhances most everything, to me. I literally will rub a leaf in between my fingers, just to get the scent. It is lovely to me. I have heard that people either love it or hate it.

I hate canned spinach but love to buy fresh and make a sort of hash, or in eggs or with a lot of pasta dishes.

Hated avocado initially and now love to add it to sandwiches, as well as any Mexican dishes.

Don’t think I have ever tried Kale.
Beets are okay, wife made beet chips, tastes better than it sounds.Good in salads too.

Okra is good. The Navy used to serve it with stewed tomatoes and I would pile that on top of rice, yum. Fried is okay too.

Brussels sprouts as long as they’re not over cooked are OK.

Cilantro? Don’t think the wife uses it. She says it tastes like soap.

Veggies work, with enough butter.

Or bacon.

If you have had gumbo, you have had okra. If you have never eaten okra you have never had gumbo.

as well as any Mexican dishes.”

I don’t do anything Mexican. Lived in Louisiana for a couple of years though. Quickly learned that there is almost nothing you can’t use to make gumbo as long as it comes from the bayou, ocean or garden and it starts with a good roux. Tried ‘gator gumbo one time. Couldn’t eat any more once I found out what was in it. Just too much of a stretch for a gal originally from Kansas.

I spent 5 years in Western Kansas. Loved the state and loved the people but hardly had a good meal that I didn’t fix myself. They did cook good steaks tho.

Thanks for the brussel sprouts recipe.

I like all of these foods, but am especially fond of cilantro. I figure it probably has something in it that I really need, or I wouldn’t be so drawn to it.
