I notice that the Gulf coast is out of the range for the tornados. Is that coastal area less prone to tornados? Where are the safe places in Texas, weather-wise?

Shelter in Place in the bomb shelter thoughtfully provided by some previous owner in the 50's.....

Gulf coast gets tornadoes and hurricanes...many tornadoes are spawned from hurricanes along the gulf coast. Safest area in Texas in terms of severe weather would be right along the New Mexico boarder and southwest Texas. Deep moisture usually does not make it that far west, which limits the occurrence of strong tornadoes. They do get some tornadoes, though.

Texas Gulf Coast does get tornados but they are small and short lived.
East Texas gets a few that rip up a trailer park or two.
West Texas gets the Kansas/Oklahoma size monsters.
In 1979 a tornado plowed through Wichita Falls with a base that was a mile wide.

This time of year, if cold fronts make it to the Gulf coast, they’ve lost their cool. Our turn comes around August and September.

Not Houston.

We had a tornado destroy an apartment complex a mile from our house a few years back.
