Twenty months after he hung up his Speedos and swore he would never swim competitively again, Michael Phelps returned to the pool just as he left it at the London Olympics with a victory salute to a packed stadium.
His triumph may have not have been quite as prestigious as his last race, when he helped the United States to gold in the 4x100metres medley relay at London 2012, but there was no disguising his delight after winning his 100m butterfly heat at Thursdays US Grand Prix Series meet in Mesa, Arizona.
Literally, I feel like a 10-year-old kid, said the most decorated Olympian in history after stepping out of the water.
Not only did he win his race but his time of 52.84 sec meant he was the fastest qualifier for the final, scheduled for later in the day. Not bad for his first comeback race against a field that included his compatriot and five-time Olympic gold medallist, Ryan Lochte, who clocked the second quickest time of 52.94 sec in a separate heat.
Phelps, whose decision to come out of retirement was first revealed by USA Swimming last week when the federation announced he was one of the entries for the Arizona meet, has been non-committal about his long-term plans, sidestepping questions about whether his ultimate aim is a fifth Olympic appearance in Rio de Janeiro in two years time.

Did he stop off in Colorado first?
PEDs.
Who’s Chooming who?
Has he invested in a set of braces yet?
RE: PEDs
If so, he won’t last long in his return. Tests will eventually catch up with him.
RE: It’s like all that bull$h!t about Dara Torres competing in the Olympics in her 40s and denying she used PEDs
So, did they test her as they did other athletes? (e.g. Marion Jones).
He won’t be tested for PEDs?
Yes, but the cheaters 2 steps ahead of the testers, particularly with HGH. A-Rod not caught in a test, and he was doing massive PEDs. It was his supplier who ratted on him. Armstrong evidently failed a test, but he leveraged around it. It was his teammates who outed the b@$t@rd.
