The MLB Local TV Announcer Rankings
Awful Announcing ^ | April 28, 2014 | Joe Lucia

Posted on 04/28/2014 3:37:56 PM PDT by EveningStar

Over the last two weeks, we polled the Awful Announcing readers on their opinions of each local broadcast team around the majors. The polls were broken down division by division to gain the perspective of both fans and rivals for each broadcast team.

The votes are in, and we weighted your grades on a four point scale for each broadcast crew and sorted them to determine who your favorite and least favorite broadcast teams were. Each “A” vote received 4 points, 3 points for a “B” vote, down to 0 points for an “F” vote. The total points scored were divided by the total number of votes to calculate what amounts to a GPA for each broadcast booth.

Ernie was a true poet and an unabashed Christian. Even when he spoke of his impending death he called it God’s next great adventure.

Mark Holtz (RIP), was real good too. He coined the phrase “Hello Win Column” and it was his signature phrase.

Scully and Harwell were artists who painted pictures of baseball in the days when most games were only broadcast on radio.

"Jerry Remy makes me cringe."

He's decent alongside Orsillo, who is great.
Dennis Eckersley, though, is just awesome - even has his own vocabulary. And is a barrel of laughs, to boot.

1. San Francisco Giants
I grew up in NYC 50s and 60s, rooted for Yankees and Giants and listened to the best ... Red Barber, Mel Allen and even Vin Scully.
I'm still a Yankees and Giants fan and watching the Giants (via MLB) I consider Krukow and Kuiper the best in the game

With Scully aging, my vote for the best is Gary Thorne of the Orioles. The worst is that Met radio guy with a lisp.

Hawk Harrelson is gawdawful. The only purpose he serves is to remind me why I don’t like the White Sux.

Marty Brennaman and Jeff Brantley do a very good job for the Reds.

Jon Miller and Gary Thorne are both really, really good. Thorne and Palmer are excellent listening. I actually like Bob Carpenter and FP Santangelo for the Nats.

“Kruk and Kuip” are former Giant teammates and have been doing games together for about 20 years and play well off of each other.

They are deservedly number 1 and refreshingly, they are not “homers” like many broadcast teams.

Jon Miller on the radio side along with Dave Flemming aren’t too bad either.

The Giants announcing team is very good. Miller is like nice, soothing music, and Krukow and Kuiper do a good job of breaking things down while not talking too much. The PA announcer, on the other hand, is awful...

Old time radio guys are usually better. They understand radio doesn’t have a picture to watch and want you to ‘see’ the action.

Younger guys are dreaming of TV jobs, or angling for syndicated sports talk shows. They want to be stars, so the game becomes secondary.

Then there are the jack-donkeys like Hawk...

Hawk Harrelson is gawdawful.
He's different and I like that, even though his "shtick" can get tiresome.
Too many announcers sound like they've been lobotomized eg, Colorado Rockies.

That's a perfect illustration of why those of us who grew up sneaking our transistor radios to school with us have such a fondness for the announcers of our youth as they were our eyes on the game, even if they were terrible.

That said and drifting out of the baseball park but staying on topic...the late Gene Hart, long-time, legendary Flyers voice was THE BEST play-by-play announcer of any sport at any time.

He’s awful. Actually the entire Orioles broadcasting teams are terrible. In my mind the worst of the worst.
